Not a film, and not from the Golden Age, but tonight TCM is showing a documentary on the English Rock Band, The Who, entitled The Kids Are Alright (1979). Showing time is 2:30 a.m est. So set your DVRs, Classic Rock fans!

I think most of it's on YouTube. I might be able to piece it together for you later. But let's just say that it really put in perspective for me how influential and DANGEROUS bands like The Who were - dangerous to music, and dangerous to society. When the Who said I hope I die before I get old in My Generation, it was a BIG fucking deal. And the female teenyboppers everywhere--the same ones who looked to the band for fashion ideas--were quite shocked when they finally realized that these bands get seriously fucked up before going on stage. Townshend told how he would often enter another 'rhealm' while performing, and wouldn't remember much of the show the following day. There's also lots of footage of the band smashing the stage to pieces, something they pretty much invented. And of course, the film is compiled just a few months before Keith Moon's death. Who by the way is without question the craziest and most insane Rocker ever IMO, and he combines that with an unbelievable comedic wit - in fact, Townshend and Moon could have probably both doubled as stand-up Comedians. They really are THAT funny, and I'm not sure we can say that about any other Rockers. And oh yeah, the music is amazing. I'd already seen most of the performances, but one I hadn't seen was the band's improvisation of Barbara Ann. Amesome. The Who - Barbara Ann (Improv.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7pat9hFPeMKeith Moon is God.

Also, llc.. after The Kids Are Alright Documentary, TCM (Underground) showed The Last Waltz (1978), a similar style film featuring Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Neil Diamond, Ron Wood (Rolling Stones), Muddy Waters, Erip Clapton, Ringo Starr and more! I recorded it and can't wait to watch/listen. It should be a classic.

And just to follow up on The Who... the documentary mentioned--as history also tells it--that when the "young Who" died, the whole concept of " eternal youth" died with them. Fans could NOT handle the fact that The Who were getting older. The band had become synonymous with the American ideal of youth and youth culture!

Well, not so much made me watch it as he said "Hey. Katie. Watch this, its good music." I grew up on the classic rock though, so I loved it. I've got the entire audio to it on my computer I believe, if anyone's interested.

To SC: Which Maltese Falcon? And which Gaslight? To Ice: Don't forget Martin Scorsese directed The Last Waltz, too. He interviews The Band between concert footage, and it's quite obvious that everyone's high on cocaine or whatever.

Tonight (Sunday) at 8:00 Eastern is "Young at Heart", a decent Frank Sinatra role from the mid 50's.
Its a light-hearted drama with some decent music (Sinatra singing the title song and a good rendition of "Someone to Watch Over Me") and some cute laughs. If you're not a fan of Sinatra or don't like the light-hearted genre stay away from this one, otherwise settle in for a decent flick. I know this is, as SC says, a "lighthearted" drama, but I love this movie. Don't know why, but maybe because it has a "chick flick" quality. Btw, Doris Day is the female lead. Anyway, one of my Sinatra favorites. TIS

Don't forget Martin Scorsese directed The Last Waltz, too. He interviews The Band between concert footage, and it's quite obvious that everyone's high on cocaine or whatever. Well, the best is in Pink Floyd's Live in Pompeii documentary, where a clearly stoned David Gilmour stares directly into the camera with bloodshot eyes and says, in response to the question of whether or not the Floyd were a drug-orientated band, "No... Of course we're not. You can trust us."

To SC: Which Maltese Falcon? And which Gaslight? There's only ONE of each as far as I'm concerned. Its Bogey's "Maltese Falcon" and the Charles Boyer/Ingrid Bergman "Gaslight".

Meet Me in St. Louis - "You and I"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9bhguJ3gwMThis is one of the more famous scenes from Meet Me in St Louis (1944). The father of a 1904 St. Louis family has just finalized plans to uproot them all to New York City. Everyone is shocked by the news. After everyone has excused themselves from the table and leaves the room, only Mr. and Mrs. Smith are left. Having incurred the wrath of the entire family, he looks over at his wife, and reproves her for ingratitude: "Aren't you afraid to stay here alone with a criminal? That's what I'm being treated like." In the parlor, Mrs. Smith sympathetically stands by her husband and accepts his decision. In a touching and moving scene expressing their family unity, inseparability and loyalty, she joins him in singing "You and I". As they sing, all of the family members slowly re-enter the room, taking their pieces of cake and sitting down quietly -- a sign that they too have accepted and understand the decision, regardless of their reluctance.

Its a wonderful movie, Ice, and one of my favorite musicals. Check out the clip (below) in which Judy Garland sings "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas". The last 2½ minutes of the clip are pure magic. JUDY GARLAND in "MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS" - CLICK HERE

I just flipped on TCM about 2:00 and saw Bogey. He and a woman were talking about a bird and I thought, "Hmmmm. I wonder if it's "The Maltese Falcon". I checked the listings, and sure it enough it is. Did you watch it??
