I sent an email to my church (where I was Baptized, had my First Communion, and was Confirmed) asking for a letter of sponsorship for my niece's baptism (as her Godfather) for my brother's church -- and they replied saying I wasn't registered with the church. HUH??

I'm bursting with fatherly pride today.
My son, who is a freshman in high school, made the JV baseball team. This is quite an accomplishment because it is a very large school and the competition was fierce.
I am especially proud of him because he played for a Teener team last year, and got very little playing time, other than when it was his turn in the rotation to pitch. His field position(3rd base) was occupied by the coach's son, andother available opportunities were given to boys whom this coach had previously coached. It was particularly frustrating when the coach would call up "swing" players (players who didn't make the Teener team) from another team, and play him ahead of my son. This boggled the minds of quite a few parents, and I questioned the coach privately against my son's wishes.
Anyway, despite what he perceived as unfair treatment, my son showed up ready to play every game, and made the most of his opportunities. It was undoubtedly frustrating for him to watch from the bench lesser players, who wouldn't get in front of a ground ball, or would laugh when they made an error as he has played the game hard since T-Ball, and excelled on all-star and tournament teams.
The players, who played ahead of him on that team, including the Teener coach's son, tried out for the JV team too, but didn't make it. I didn't think they would. The try outs took place over four weeks, and he was nervous going to school today extra early to check the posting outside of the locker room. He texted my wife immediately with the good news.
Knowing the talent that is assembled on the JV team of 18 boys, coupled with the fact that my son is one of the few freshmen, I certainly realize that his playing time may be limited, but he's okay with that. He feels that his time will come, and he's thrilled with the idea of practicing every day with the high school team.

That's great, Klyd! I know what a huge baseball fan you are to begin with, so it must be extra special for you. Now when you take that boy to the pub for one of your Friday night dinners, sneak him a sip of your beer. We won't tell anyone.

You have to be a member of the parish. I went through this with my mom when she was my daughter's sponsor for Confirmation a few years ago. When she moved in with us, she never "registered" with any church, so we had to have her grandfathered in as part of our family to get her sponsor certificated signed. I assumed having had all my sacraments there that I'd be "registered" -- I always went w/ my dad, so figured so....

Now when you take that boy to the pub for one of your Friday night dinners, sneak him a sip of your beer. We won't tell anyone. I played pee-wee baseball and pick up games in middle school against high school kids (also basketball) but that's about it. My grandpa even came and watched some games I played in. I remember one moment where I was on 3rd base and someone hit the ball so I ran towards home. The catcher got the ball and stood in the dirt thing on the white line so I ran in the grass around him to home plate. I'm not sure if that counts or not. My dad said it was a big deal that my grandpa was there to see me play because he could never get him to come to anything. Grandpa was an alcoholic and his nickname is my first name. When I was maybe 7 or 8 my dad had a friend over and they were drinking beer. So was I (non-alcoholic) and I thought it was cool.

I'm not a Catholic so Geoff, Do you have to place membership at the Church you're Niece will be baptized at? And is Parish the same thing as a congregation?

Geoff, Do you have to place membership at the Church you're Niece will be baptized at? And is Parish the same thing as a congregation? No, Mig - the other church just wants a letter from my church saying that I belong to a Catholic church. I think those terms are used pretty much interchangeably. Each diocese (administrative region) is divided into parishes, each with their own central church called the parish church, where religious services take place. A Congregation is basically the people in that church. (from wiki)

Well I hope the church you go to will write that letter for you. If not I'll vouch for ya.

I went to the Church and explained my situation. Apparently I was never registered, or perhaps they lost touch of me after I moved or whatever. So I did, and since I had my sacraments there (they checked the vault lol) as a courtesy they gave me the letter. Probably didn't help that she knew my dad, either. She said otherwise it'd take 3 MONTHS and I'd have to interview w/ a priest and all that. The Baptism is in 3 weeks. *whew*

And in sadder news, I just found out my Uncle Vito passed away last night. He wasn't in very good shape (Alzheimer's and whatever else) so it wasn't unexpected. I hadn't seen him in many years since he lives in Virginia, but I may go down there for my Dad who's coming up from Florida. At least he's in a better place... RIP!
