The novel explains that the midwife didn't understand what Luca meant by his choice of words, "race" (whether that meant the baby was part Irish, OR if meant the baby's mother was a whore, OR if it meant that it sprang from Luca's own loins). There was no explanation of
WHY Luca had the baby killed, other than the race thing.
