Puzo was trying to "endow" Sonny with some additional machismo that would set the stage for later examples of his violence and bad judgment ("thinking with his dick"). But the real purpose will be revealed to you later, when the novel catches up with Lucy Mancini.

The first time i read it I was kind of amazed. Because Mario Puzo brings up all kinds of things like that in his books that really dont have to do with anything. But two hundred pages later it all makes sense. Or fivehundred in the case of Fools Die.
