This quote is from LLC, I lost the quote thingys "Yeah, all American's do is bitch and moan. It's our thing. Basically, the 70s came, and it was just such a horrible decade that everyone got really fucking stupid."
I have no idea what you are referring to. Being I was around in the 70's, I guess I got stupid and no one told me. Gee, thanks, that explains a lot.

Did you hear that Exxon is going to close company owned gas stations because they can't make a large enough profit from them? They'd rather concentrate on raping us from the corporate level where the profits are greater. ...and it gets their name off of the station so the association with obscene profits is insulated. We'll be mad at Mohammed's Quik Serve rather than the Exxon tiger going in our tank, I mean rear. I could be wrong but I THOUGHT I read that the Exxon name would still be posted at those "independent" stations. You bring up a good point, though. Tiger Woods is a popular favorite; Tony the Tiger is still greeeeeeeeeat; but the Exxon tiger is a fucker now!

I saw an interesting letter to the editor in my local paper. It said that while we can piss and moan all we want about gas prices, the "enemy" is not Big Oil, but our local governments. The example given was as follows:
If you fill a 15 gallon gas tank, the oil companies make between $1.05 and $1.50 in profits. However, in NY, the federal, state and county taxes collected average $8.70!!!! That's based on federal tax of $0.18 and state and local taxes averaging $0.40. So, who is doing the reaming here??? Consider what you are getting in return for the oil company profit that you calculated and what you are getting from the federal, state, and local taxes you are getting. Also consider the methodology through which the oil companies arrive at what they charge and the methodology through which America's governments authorize taxes. I don't think any of us has any input into the oil companies methodology. By the way, what jurisdication applies local taxes to gasoline?

Went to my nephew's 8th grade graduation tonight... left around 4pm... on the way home, around 5 hours later... prices were about 5c higher than they were a few hours ago. This bullshit is ridiculous! At this point, I want to shove a 55-gallon oil drum into every ass that determines gas prices!! I guess we're lucky here (for now, knock on wood) to still be under $4/gallon ($3.95++, if you consider that "lucky") but only 50 minutes north it was pushing $4.20!! WTF??! I'll curse too much if I go on... but it should be self-explanatory...

It varies. There are dozens of counties in NY, and they each have their own. Apparently, there are abount 60 counties in New York state. The county gasoline tax you referred to is actually a sales tax that the county may impose on all sales with a few exceptions. Yes. As I said, there are dozens. The tax breaks down to about 18 cents from federal, 35 cents from the state, and then whatever your county (and it sometimes varies even within counties, as cities can impose their own) charges. That's why the "average" is about 58 cents per gallon. Which is almost $9 on a 15 gallon purchase. Which is what I said to begin with.

Anybody here drive a Prius? I am seriously considering buying one next year. I'm curious if the the claims of 44 MPG are accurate. My coworker's daughter has one. She needed his Highlander because she was going upstate during the winter, so he took her Prius. The little meter that indicates the average MPG showed 42 if I remember correctly. It was also quite comfortable and had a nice ride. I think Saladbar owns one. They are certainly expensive, though, and the tax credits that they give don't amount to a whole lot.

A good friend has a Prius here in AZ. He and his wife regularly get over 40 mpg in it. I've ridden in it and it's a nice, quiet, comfortable car. But I'm not sure I'd want to pay a premium for it. My wife and I have two cars here. Our day-to-day car is a 2002 Honda Civic with the regular (non-VTEC) 117-hp 4 cylinder engine and auto trans. We've never gotten less than 30 mpg under any driving conditions, and up to 38 on the road. Great car. The other is a 2000 BMW M5, a real hot rod with a 400-hp, 5-liter V8 and 6-speed manual. The Bimmer has gotten as much as 27.5 mpg when I've been able to drive it, on cruise control, in 55-mph zones with no traffic or lights. But once I get off the cruise control and into urban traffic, it drops to 19 mpg or less.

I have an '01 Civic coupe (w/ AT), but honestly cannot remember what model (DX/HX/LX/EX) as I got it used a few years ago. Love it! I've been meaning to calculate my MPG from gas receipts, but didn't think it was 30+ ... cool! (Well, maybe a bit less for me since since I accelerate like a jackass when I'm impatient (24/7) lol). About $40/tank to basically fill it, I guess more now since the last time (used to be half that ).

I just got a good laugh. The local news station just showed a snippet of W giving a speech blaming the Democrat controlled congress for the high gas prices. All the while I'm thinking he's saying, "Ka-ching, ka-ching" (as he's counting all the money his family is making from these record prices).

Then he'll get to start writing his memoirs. I heard that Laura already gave him a new set of crayons.
