First of all welcome to the BB! And a good question to start off. To answer, the book gives a lot more detail into not only Tom's background, but characters such as Luca Brasi and Johnny Fontaine. (Brasi's background, as well as Neri's, is fantastic, but I--with many others on here--find Fontaine's character follow up to be tedious and irrelevant to the story.)
