When I was talking to a friend, I made fun of another person's intellect, not knowing that my friend had eloped with her the previous weekend.

13 years ago a colleague from work asked that I serve as a groomsman at his wedding. At the rehersal I met his family for the first time as we were practicing a run through of the wedding. It was a stiff, quiet, serious crowd.

I was near the altar when they started by having my friend's young nephew, the ring bearer, march down the aisle. He was doing a funny hop kind of walk. It was dead serious up to that moment, so to add a little levity I yelled, "That's the spirit!" And I imitated his walk as I kind of hopped to him. When I got closer, I realized he was physically and mentally disabled. I looked back toward the altar to the glares of the family.
