I don't know why comic relief is a critical element in a good drama. It can do without it too.

LIST I recently mentioned as "must-see". I think 2,4,5 and 9 have no (or almost insignificant) comic relief elements. I don't think that dramatic tension should necessarily be modulated with humor. It can be done in other ways too, depending upon the aesthetics of the movie.
