The NFL season is 2 days away. Just about time to predict who will be playing for the Lombardi trophy on February 1st, 2009.
Las Vegas Odds from Vegas.com:
NFL Super Bowl XLIII Last updated July 3, 2008 Team Current New England Patriots 5/2 Dallas Cowboys 9/2 Indianapolis Colts 6/1 Jacksonville Jaguars 10/1 New York Giants 10/1 San Diego Chargers 10/1 Green Bay Packers 12/1 Seattle Seahawks 15/1 Pittsburgh Steelers 18/1 Chicago Bears 18/1 New Orleans Saints 20/1 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 28/1 Tennessee Titans 30/1 Washington Redskins 30/1 Minnesota Vikings 30/1 Cleveland Browns 30/1 Cincinnati Bengals 38/1 Denver Broncos 38/1 Arizona Cardinals 45/1 Philadelphia Eagles 45/1 Buffalo Bills 60/1 Carolina Panthers 60/1 Detroit Lions 60/1 Houston Texans 60/1 New York Jets 75/1 St. Louis Rams 75/1 Kansas City Chiefs 100/1 Baltimore Ravens 125/1 Oakland Raiders 125/1 San Francisco 49ers 125/1 Atlanta Falcons 150/1 Miami Dolphins 150/1 San Francisco 49ers 125/1 Atlanta Falcons 150/1 Miami Dolphins 150/1
As a gambler the Jets at 75/1 might be a good long shot. I'd say the Eagles at 45/1 could also give you a nice payday if you have the money to lose.
My picks for the Super Bowl:
The AFC has at least 5 teams I could easily pick for this spot. The Patriots Defense is getting old and they have no running game. San Diego Chargers have a great team, the game's best runner, capable Wide Receivers and TE Antonio Gates. This could be the year another QB from the first round of 2003 wins a Lombardi Trophy. I don't think they will though.
Indianapolis returns 20 of 22 starters and begins the season healthy minus C Jeff Saturday and Ryan Lilja (Who's autograph I got at training camp). How Saturday's absence will affect the team remains to be seen (he is responsible for shifting the O-Line after Peyton Audibles) but the Colts have a lot of depth on the O-line and consistency with OL Coach Howard Mudd (Who's autograph I got at training camp).
As long as they stay healthy they can overcome the 2nd toughest schedule in the league and win their second title in three years.
Jacksonville Jaguars are a very strong team. They have a physical team. Their defense will wear you out and smack you in the mouth. They drafted some pass rushers in April who should make things tougher for opposing QBs. Their running game can tire out your defenders with Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor leading the way. David Garrard is expected to have a breakout year with the free agent acquisitions at WR, but we'll see if Jerry Porter is a one year wonder or if his problem was he played in Oakland.
Indianapolis Colts (Doh!) vs...
Man, the NFC is such a wild card. Dallas is a good regular season team but when is the last time they won a playoff game? I can't pick them until Tony Romo shows me he can win a playoff game.
The Giants will challenge but I don't see them going all the way.
How about another NFC East team? If McNabb and Westbrook stay healthy they have Jim Johnson as D-Coordinator, I can see Philly getting back to the promised land. And losing.
Indianapolis Colts vs Philadelphia Eagles, Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa, FL.
Long as I remember The rain been coming down. Clouds of Mystery pouring Confusion on the ground. Good men through the ages, Trying to find the sun; And I wonder, Still I wonder, Who'll stop the rain.
