Today, for some reason, I decided to organize old pictures, momentos and such. Fortunately when I move to my condo, I got rid of a lot of junk. smile

Now, in anticipation of retiring (hopefully soon), I'm at a point where I want to throw away things I don't use and sort things I want saved for my kids and grandkids.

One of my very old photo albums from when I was a kid and got a camera for Christmas was literally falling apart. I took all the pictures out, as the pages of the album literally cracked/snapped apart. lol I'll get another album for those memories (all black and white). I saved of course personal events and experiences like memorable concerts I attended, my parents picture from the newspaper when they celebrated 50 years of marriage; and my cousin's Ordination whih was the first and only ordination I had ever been to.

At the very end of the album I found pictures I had collected of a series of JFK photos which, if I'm not mistaken came from Bazooka bubblegum during the early sixties (like they did with baseball cards, for those who remember). I peeled those off and am storing them along with several what I think my be historic newspaper articles (i.e. Elvis's death, JFK Assassination; John Lennon's murder; 911 WTC attack, newspaper from Jan. 1, 2000; and the latest of the Obama Presidency win.

I took SC's advice and got one of those vacuum seald bags and a plastic container to put it it. I just wish I would have taken better care of some of the older articles which are pretty yellow and antique looking.

That sounds like a fun way to spend the day, TIS. There's nothing nicer than looking at stuff like that.

My dad saved the Life (or was it Look) magazine, with all the pictures of the first moon walk. It's not just the historic moment, but the memories of what you were doing, who you were with when it happened.

Yes,it's been fun and nostalgic and as in certain cases, some items/pictures brought either happy/sad tears to my eyes and sparked ancient memories. smile

Some things, like pictures I saved and have no idea who they are; or pictures that are so blurry and show nothing significant you wonder why you held on to them, were easy to get rid of. Some stuff though, I had a hard time deciding? (like old report cards, wedding invitations, souveneirs. Why would I want to keep them?)I made a "junk" pile and a "perhaps" pile and sort of compromised with myself on what to keep and what not to keep. I think I condensed it nicely and took my time keeping the right stuff.

Yea SB you are right about the memories in the cases of certain events. Sometimes one event in history (or even a personal historic event) will spark a great number of memories of an entire era. All I can say is thank God for memories(needless to say the good memores especially). They will always be yours and yours alone. They can never be taken from you. smile

Before he died, my dad converted all the 8mm films he took of the family when we were growing up to video with a music in the background. It's so nice to watch them from time to time. I can't believe how skinny I was.

My parents did that as well. However, no music or extras at all. All the 8mms were merely transferred to VHS, which is great compared to using a movie projector. Remember those? lol Now, I don't own a VHS and I have to transfer a DVD. Btw, I still have the 8mm in the closet but what good are they right? I should just dump them. ohwell

A real don doesn't seek publicity. A real don, like Barzini, would have smashed the camera if his picture was taken.

Hey New Yorkers. The lower east side and the upper west side. Manhattan, right? What areas do they encompass and what kind of neighborhoods are they?

Here's the answer to your first question:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan_neighborhoods

Lower East Side I think of Little Italy, Chinatown, the Bowery... With the Village, Bohemia, basically.

Upper West Side I consider money. Big money. Donald Trump and shit. lol

Talking of Don Trump i see he has been given the go ahead to build a massive golf club, leisure type place in Scotland. He says it will be the biggest and best in the world. Does he have any idea what the weather is like on the north east coast of Scotland? It rains heavily and blows a hurricane constantly, even in summer eek

Who wants to play golf in that?

I love it when my boss calls in the morning and asks if I would like to take the day off. Even though I need the money and need to work, I couldn't stop myself from saying yes! I'm going enjoy being lazy today and catch up on some movies or episodes of The Wire! smile

I just don't get it... I sent a pkg FedEx Priorty Overnight from NJ to NY:

Nov 10, 2008

2:39 PM Picked up TOMS RIVER, NJ
7:49 PM Left FedEx origin facility LAKEWOOD, NJ
9:02 PM Departed FedEx location NEWARK, NJ

Nov 11, 2008

12:10 AM Arrived at FedEx location MEMPHIS, TN
4:18 AM Departed FedEx location MEMPHIS, TN
7:09 AM At dest sort facility CHEEKTOWAGA, NY
8:07 AM At local FedEx facility CHEEKTOWAGA, NY
8:30 AM On FedEx vehicle for delivery CHEEKTOWAGA, NY
9:59 AM Delivered

What?? confused

I guess it doesn't matter how they do it since the job gets done -- and it's pretty amazing, actually! Just seems to be a bit of a waste to me! lol

Or maybe Tennessee is way off. Cuz for UPS, it keeps telling me I live an hour away from where I actually live, despite the pkgs always being here and not there.

FedEx was the largest client for my former company. We actually had to watch a film about FedEx and its founder Fred Smith. He actually did keep the company going on winnings from gambling when the banks wouldn't extend his credit. And he conceived the company in a college paper, and was told by the professor that it was bound for failure because he insisted that every single package be routed through the company's hub in Memphis, TN.

I don't know if this is true today, since the company has grown so much, but at one point, even if you were sending an overnight package to someone on the other side of Toms River, the package would still have gone through Memphis.

Geoff,

A few years ago, I sent my parents something really special for Christmas (though no overnight). I kept tracking the order and it was more or less the same thing. It seemed to have stopped in many different places before it was delivered. confused Not the route I would have gone, but like you say, at least it got there within three days. lol

Yeah, pretty much, Geoffy. The upper west side has gotten very pricey over the last few years. Actually, the apartment values on the upper west side out priced the apartments on the upper east side last year for the first time ever. However, the west side still seems much more relaxed. The locals much more "artsy," a bit like Greenwich Village.

Speaking of Greenwich Village, Geoffy: Don't forget that most of the village is on the west side. Although, over the years, realtors did start referring to the whole area that you mentioned (the Bowery, Soho, etc...) as the "East Village."

Regardless of what you call them, ALL of these neighborhoods have gotten very expensive since the Dinkins era (the worst mayor of my lifetime). Like him or not---and I can't stand him as a person---Rudy Giuliani's 8 year crusade on this city left it much safer, much trendier, and both the property values and rents have exploded.

I'm not sure if there's another city in the world where some people are willing to pay almost $3,000 a month for a one bedroom (on average) and think it reasonable.

But it's still New York. smile

lol

Actually, my brother was great with the Slinky. He could probably get the damn thing walking upstairs.

Now Silly Putty was my favorite, especially pressing it on the comic strips and thn stretching it to see Dagwood Bumstead's face get wide.

Hey guys, check this out. You've to wait for it to load but it analyzes your browser's history to determine your gender. And as we all are confused about that until now, you may find your answer here. It turns out there is a 58% chance that I'm a dude. grin

Afs, that analysis is VERY inaccurate! I'm certainly not 100% female!! eek eek (Wait, let me double-check that... yup! I'm not a female!) lol It didn't seem to notice all the sports sites I visit daily... and it doesn't look at porn sites (not that I visit any whistle ) I noticed quite a few realty and home improvement sites on my list -- that shouldn't mean anything! tongue wink
