. . . hell if I didn't have more important things to do with my money, I'd be buying all the firearms that I could. What's more important than firearms, Iceman? Well, I guess that Jesus Camp amd camouflage clothing can be a bit pricy.

I think this is mostly paranoia endorsed and exploited by political enemies in order to sell guns and stoke up fear.
In the first place even if Obama wanted to disarm everyone he couldn't do it. Despite the expansion of Presidential power over the past Administration the President is not a monarch. New gun laws would need to be passed. There are more than enough gun rights advocates on both sides of the aisle to prevent excessive legislation.
Secondly, remember that for the first time in history the Supreme Court endorsed a federal individual right to own firearms. Obama came out, albeit tepidly, in support of that ruling. But constitutionally, it wouldn't matter if he hated it with every bone in his body, it's not under his control. The Court has ruled.
Finally there is just not the history of Obama taking leadership positions on controversial issues and ramming through his agenda. His record and his public statements seem to show someone who is much more interested in building consensus...perhaps to a fault.
"I have always believed that the Second Amendment protects the right of individuals to bear arms, but I also identify with the need for crime-ravaged communities to save their children from the violence that plagues our streets through common-sense, effective safety measures. The Supreme Court has now endorsed that view, and while it ruled that the D.C. gun ban went too far, Justice Scalia himself acknowledged that this right is not absolute and subject to reasonable regulations enacted by local communities to keep their streets safe. Today's ruling, the first clear statement on this issue in 127 years, will provide much-needed guidance to local jurisdictions across the country.
"As President, I will uphold the constitutional rights of law-abiding gun-owners, hunters, and sportsmen. I know that what works in Chicago may not work in Cheyenne. We can work together to enact common-sense laws, like closing the gun show loophole and improving our background check system, so that guns do not fall into the hands of terrorists or criminals. Today's decision reinforces that if we act responsibly, we can both protect the constitutional right to bear arms and keep our communities and our children safe.
"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives." Winter is Coming
Now this is the Law of the Jungleāas old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die. As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

Lilo, I tend to agree. The gun companies are making bank I'm sure. Also, I think a good part of the paranoia is the fact simply that McCain lost and this is a waya to lash out. I have never heard Obama say he was going to take away peoples gun rights. As a matter of fact, as you post, just the opposite. I suppose, putting myself on the other side of the fence, it is a good way to rile people up, although, I don't think in the end, it'll matter. TIS

The sudden fear about taxing ammunition was started by the NRA and referenced a 9 year old article in which then State Senator Obama was quoted as saying that he would support such a measure. Here's the quote from cnn.com: Some customers are stocking up specifically on ammunition and point to concerns raised by the National Rifle Association, which ran anti-Obama ads during the campaign.
The NRA said Obama would support a "huge new tax on my guns and ammo," referencing a 1999 article in a Chicago newspaper saying the then-Illinois state senator promoted a plan to increase federal taxes by 500 percent on the sales of firearms and ammunition.
But as a state legislator, Obama would not have had any control over federal taxes. And as a U.S. senator and presidential candidate, he has not introduced or promoted such a proposal.People may not be able to pay their mortgages, but they have money to spend on guns because of a rumor??? Why people don't do their homework is beyond me. I mean, aren't guns pretty expensive? For anyone interested in the whole article, http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/11/11/obama.gun.sales/

When posting on the Web, satire often fails and falls flat. Again, I do apologize. That being said, is that banjo music I hear? Weeeeeeeeee.........

We have pistol's, shotguns, rifles, in our house. We use them for hunting target practice and we will use them to defend our property and our family. When we buy guns we do it LEAGALLY.
My hubby heard that if Obama can't take guns out of people's hands that he will tax guns and ammo so high that no one will be able to afford them. He heard 500%.
I'm just saying this is what he heard. I don't know if this is true or not. But in the meantime the Col wants to stock up on ammo just in case.
I don't think we are gun nuts either. That's basically what they've done down here in OZ. The tax on Firearms and ammo is ridiculous. Not that I have any love for Guns at all, But It really is a massive amount. Besides, I know about 4 places that sell Guns under the counter from Milk Bars and Pawn shops. So I could still easily get one. Just don't have the need.

Of course they'll buy guns on a rumor. Somebody might wish to inform these idiots that the president doesn't have the power to raise or lower taxes, the Congress does.

First of all I don't appreciate you calling people like my husband who like to buy guns and that a idiot. I seriously doubt that if he gets legislation on raising the gun and ammio taxes on his desk that he'll veto it.

Mignon, Mignon, what did I ever do to deserve this disrespect. I never called your husband an idiot because he likes to buy guns. I don't even know your husband because you never even invited me over for a cup of coffee. It doesn't make any difference whether someone wants to excercise the right to bear arms, you understand, but this over arming business is a little dangerous.
