I predict Detroit makes the playoffs within 4 years. I'd take that bet with just about any team, given the success of revenue sharing, the draft system and the weighted schedules. I think that the Lions have improved significantly just by jettisoning Millen and Marinelli. While it may be tempting to grab a QB with the first overall pick, I'd pass on Stafford and Sanchez, and perhaps trade the pick for defensive talent or a lineman to improve the running game and a later first round pick. They have a long way to go, but the league is designed to allow dramatic improvement.

They need to start with defense. Decent QBs, RBs, and receivers are plentiful. But it's defense that means the most at this point. Spoken like a true Pittsburgh guy. I think tonight's game says it all: defense! defense!

AND IT'S OFFICIAL! From ESPN: The Indianapolis Colts announced Tuesday that Ron Meeks, their defensive coordinator for the last seven years, has resigned.
Take a look back at the coaching career of Tony Dungy. The move sets up new coach Jim Caldwell to hire a top defensive assistant who could lead the team away from the Tampa 2 defense that Tony Dungy was known for and look to add some size to a team that's put a premium on speed on defense.
The Colts were third overall in defense in 2007 but dropped to 11th in 2008, 24th against the run.
Meeks, 54, joined the Colts when Dungy took over in 2002. Before that he had served as an assistant with Dallas, Cincinnati, Atlanta, Washington and St. Louis.

so, who do you think is going to take over for defense then? Lots of rumors of Herm Edwards or the DB coach, not sure yet. LT and the Chargers isn't getting much attention... Chargers GM A.J. Smith mocked LaDainian Tomlinson's website post that he has "no intentions of leaving San Diego."
"I have no intentions of leaving San Diego," said Smith, reciting the post verbatim. "San Diego is where my GM career started and where I'd like it to end. I also have nothing but love and the utmost respect for this team, the players, and the Spanos family. I have absolutely no control over how long I will be with the Chargers." When your GM mocks someone who has contributed that much to your club... I don't see LT being a Charger too much longer.

so, who do you think is going to take over for defense then? Colts have talked to Tampa Bay's D-line coach, Larry Coyer. Before Tampa, Coyer spent seven seasons in Denver, the last four as defensive coordinator, the first three as linebackers coach. The Broncos defense was among the league’s best in stopping the run and yards allowed when Coyer was coordinator.
He was also the New York Jets’ defensive line coach in 1994.
The West Virginia native is a member of Marshall University’s Hall of Fame as a player. He started coaching at his alma mater as secondary coach in 1965.

46-49-1 (0-1 playoffs) is not good enough after you've had 8 years to turn a team around. He has 1 season better than 8-8 in 8 years.
Lewis joined the team in 2003, which would give him 6 years, not 8. In the six years preceding Lewis' arrival, the Bengals were 26-67, and had been the worst franchise in professional sports over the past 10-12 years. He inherited a mess, unlike any coach in memory. He instantly made them respectable. It was amazing they won their division in 2005. I don't think the Bengals could get a better coach. Guys, like Cowher, Holmgren and Shanahan, would never think of going to Cincinnati with their front office not committed to winning. Cincy would have to tap a relatively unknown commodity and likely regress. I think the dysfunction of the Bengals rests squarely on the shoulders of Mike, Pete and Paul Brown.

His teams have been mostly mediocre and undisciplined during his tenure. He's a defensive coach but none of his Bengals defenses have been outstanding. His teams have been better than the one he took over, but has done all he can for this team. Both parties need a new start.
