Tony grew suspicious of Jimmy shortly after he was busted. He thought he was released a little too promptly after his arrest. Also, Jimmy began asking Tony, among others, for repeated details of their criminal dealings. Although it was never officially confirmed that Jimmy was a "rat" on the show, his odd behavior was enough for Tony and others to think he was wearing a wire. As such, Uncle Junior sanctioned a hit on Jimmy and said he wanted a message to be sent. Christopher lured Jimmy to a hotel room with a beautiful Russian girl as bait. Once Jimmy was seated in the room, Silvio came in and put a gun to the back of his head. Jimmy realized what was about to happen and went for a gun in his ankle holster but was too late. Christopher and Silvio taunt him by saying he should call for help down his microphone (a wire) - at which point Silvio shot him in the back of his head. Given that he didn't deny being a rat when he was at gun point, it is likely that Jimmy was an informant. As for the message, Jimmy's body was found in an alley with a rat stuffed in his mouth. Christopher even went so far as to call in a bomb threat to Jimmy's wake, to which Dante replied, "See now, that's over the top."

I've seen Season one 5 times!!

Jimmy and Pussy were mixed up by corrupt cop, Vic Makazian. Tony desperately wanted Jimmy to be the rat and not Pussy, as Tony and Pussy were best friends. As for the hotel secene and Silvio saying, "You should call for help down your microphone", Jimmy said, "Oh god" when Silvio put the gun to his head. This isn't a reference to being a rat, this is Jimmys way of saying, "I'm a goner". Jimmy knew that his "friends" had thought that he was a rat and Jimmy went for his gun because he thought that he might have had a chance to kill either Chrissy or Silvio, or both.

After Jimmy was found in the alley, Skip said to Pussy, "Jimmy Altieri ate a bullet for you". This mean't that Jimmy wasn't a rat.

Watch what Jimmy does when he gets out of jail talking with Tony asking him about the Columbians and the money, then Brenden Filone Hit with Junior, read his body language when he is talking about these things. The actor did a great job of it. Altieri and Pussy were both rats. "He didn't have time to put on anything decent."

Not to mention as Tony said in the first conversation after Jimmy was released how he got out so soon when he was already on parole or something similar.

He was a rat, and it's obvious.

The rats only there because he was a informer.

What about all the other informers who disappear, they don't have rats in their mouths.

Rats/Informer is the same thing..

The rat would have been put there as a warning to other members,that that is what they do to you if you inform on them.

Rats is a tough guy euphmism for government witness.

They don't want to say to their wiseguy chums, "Jimmy was a government witness", they wanna say, "Jimmy was a rat". Makes them feel hard that they got the stool pigeon or yellow canary - there ya go, 2 more for your list!

Jack Massarone was also a rat; as relevant as Adriana, too.

I've just remembered that in "Remember When", Tony and Paulie go on vacation because Larry Barese is finally singing to the law.

But he ended up giving false information.

"Rat" and "informer" IS the same thing. A person can be a rat and not necessarily end up being a government witness, although it usually leads to that. You have to be an informer before you can be a witness after the RICO charges go down...

I wouldn't call Larry a rat. He may have thought about turning on Tony and the crew but he didn't. He gave false information to score himself points and still protect his pals at the same time.

Chrissy wasn't a rat. That would have been too big a storyline not to use since Chris has more inside info on Tony than anyone else did

Get over it man. You think you are the first one who came up with the brilliant hypothesis that Chris was a rat? Well you aren't and most agree Chris was not a rat.

I could start my own thread to saying Paulie was a rat and come up with all kinds of reasons why I believe this. Doesn't make it true though.

jimmy was not a rat as lompac was saying it was pussy the dirty cop got the two mixed up. He was telling tony what the feds were telling him. The way they did the scene made it seem like jimmy was trying to get tony to say something incriminating but in reality he was telling tony he has a snitch in his crew and telling him what the feds were building on tony. That is all tony needed to wack jimmy. The columbian rip off didnt involve jimmy pussy and paulie were in on that. There is no way jimmy was a rat they (tony&jr)knew they had one but jumped the gun.
