The disgraced former Mayor of Detroit, Kwame Kilpatrick, was released from jail. Within days he had a new job paying six figures + commissions at Compuware's health care subsidiary, Covisint. This was announced on the same day that Compuware laid off another 250 employees. The Compuware Chairman , Peter Karmanos, and Kilpatrick are good friends. It's nice to have friends...

Olivant is 100% correct. The former mayor pled guilty to perjury/official misconduct charges. There were rumors that Kilpatrick hosted a party at the official city mansion in which strippers/prostitutes performed. The state DA investigated and found no evidence of a party. The local police also started investigating, much to Kilpatrick's displeasure. So Kilpatrick fired the cops who wouldn't back off. Two of the cops were deputy chiefs. They sued for wrongful termination. They alleged the real reason for termination was that they stumbled across Kilpatrick's affair with his chief of staff, Christine Beatty. Kilpatrick refused to settle and the case went to trial. In that trial both Kilpatrick and Beatty denied the affair; Kilpatrick denied ANY affairs. The city lost the suit. But then Kilpatrick agreed to pay the cops MORE than the judgment. So the local papers started investigating and found that the cops had text message evidence that graphically and explicitly detailed a long adulterous relationship between Beatty and Kilpatrick. (The two had gone to high school together, actually a cross town rival of MY old high school ) The papers got their hands on some of the most lurid items and published them. The local DA, who is no friend of Kilpatrick, charged with him with various perjury and obstruction of justice counts. Other shady activities were also revealed. During all this Kilpatrick got into a shoving match with some cops who were trying to serve a subpoena on one of Kilpatrick's friends. Even the governor, got involved because she had the sole power to remove a sitting mayor (civilly). Finally Kilpatrick gave up and pled guilty. He did a little over 3 months in jail; he can't run for or serve in political office for 5 years, and has to pay back $1 million in restitution. At this point most people are happy to see him gone. However he is an undeniably charismatic and energetic fellow. The issue that some folks have is that with the economy so bad it scarcely seems "fair" that a convicted perjurer can waltz into a sales job that pays a minimum of $100K and perhaps as much as $300/400K. But life's not fair...

Thanks for the details, Lilo. From my neck of the woods comes this disturbing story. A young man (in his late 20s) was crossing the street and was hit by a car. The driver stopped shortly after, not sure if he had, in fact, hit somebody. The victim was lying in the street and was hit by another car and became wedged under the car. The second car dragged him for 20 miles ( ) and the driver thought something was wrong. He got out of his car, checked under the hood, and couldn't see anything wrong so he started to drive again. It was only at this point that somebody walking down the street saw the body being dragged and waved down the car to stop. The driver was dumbfounded. Police ruled this an accident (albeit a particularly gruesome one). Neither of the drivers was charged and both had clean driving records. What I find disturbing though is that the widow of the victim is screaming that SOMEBODY has to be blamed. OK, granted if I was a surviving spouse of an accident like this I'd be very upset too, but WHY does SOMEBODY have to be blamed? Isn't is possible that it was just an ugly accident? The facts and evidence certainly support that.

Two stories from the NYC Metro area... both involve spanking the monkey. The first, still a breaking news story from Stamford, CT - a pet chimpanzee went on a rampage and attacked a visitor to his owner's home this afternoon. Evidently the attack was brutal (the victim has life threatening injuries). The police were called by the chimp's owner and they too were attacked upon their arrival. They had to shoot (and kill) the monkey. Second - NY Governor David Patterson is proposing a tax on downloaded porn from the internet. He's expecting to raise $15 million for the cash starved state. WTF??

An update on this horrible story - Police released the calls to 911... the chimp's owner called the police begging them to come over right away and shoot the animal. She thought the chimp killed her friend (who had come over to visit). Evidently the chimp had REALLY tore into the friend (who is now in critical condition with life-threatening injuries). Supposedly the monkey had Lyme Disease and was given some Xanax earlier in the day. There's no word yet on whether that Xanax had affected the chimp enough to make him start the attack. What a weird story!!

What a weird story!! Chimps can be vicious. Several years ago an older couple was visiting a chimp, that they had raised for years and had donated to a zoo. It was the monkey's birthday and they were bringing him a cake (which is a story all on its own). I think this chimp was 35-40, but it inexplicably attacked and mauled the man (I can't remember if the man survived). Also, when chimps give birth in the wild, the mothers have to hide the babies so that the fathers won't eat them. That is a strange story. I wonder if the Xanax made him crazy. I had heard that the police ran to their car to protect themselves from the perturbed primate, but the chimp got into the vehicle where the police shot him. He then ran from the car bleeding and the police followed the blood trail into the house and found him dead.

You may or may not know that in California they have been trying to agree on a budget (our State is in bad shape). Finally, they reached an agreement today. I am not at all sure of the particulars, but expect something to go up in price. They were trying for a 12 cent a gallon gas tax but that was tossed. I really do think they'll screw the smokers even more though. I thought I heard cigaret taxes to go up. Glad I don't smoke anymore. Even at my school we are told to "brace ourselves" because there will be many cutbacks. TIS
