Santino - As silly as that appears now, that's the mentality that was very real back when I was in elementary school. We used to have air raid drills.... the neighborhood siren would go off and all school kids had to get under their desks. Even though I was in the second or third grade then, I had some of the best sex of my life during those drills (sharing a desk with a pretty gal). Eisenhower was president and Kruschev (the Russian premier) was the enemy and we were taught to expect an attack (or, at least be prepared for one). The fear that came a few years later during the Cuban missile crisis was VERY REAL! All large buildings had those "Shelter" signs (indicating that you could use the basements or hallways as a shelter) and some buildings still have them as a reminder of the 50s fear.

I had posted this hoping that you would have an interesting story or some bit of info about it SC, and Lo and Behold, you did! you never cease to amaze me
He - (Simón Bolívar) - was shaken by the overwhelming revelation that the headlong race between his misfortunes and his dreams was at that moment reaching the finishing line. The rest was darkness. "Damn it," He sighed. "How will I ever get out of this labyrinth!" So what’s the labyrinth? That’s the mystery isn’t it? Is the labyrinth living or dying? Which is he trying to escape - the world, or, the end of it?

I'm sure many of the others from my age range can add other stories (MaryCas, Turnbull, dt, TIS, goombah, feel free to chime in here).
Some of the kids, even then, would say that we were all going to die if an A-bomb or H-bomb hit but I was confident that if I hid under my desk I'd survive. Ah, the innocence of youth. That all changed after I read the book "Hiroshima" (by John Hersey) which was required reading in junior high school. (If you haven't read it, I HIGHLY recommend you do so. It's a short book recalling the absolute horror of atomic warfare from its survivors).
And to Marcy Spatt, my desk partner and one of my first crushes, thanks for not ratting me out when I'd pinch your butt during the air-raid drills under our desk.

Ah yes, I remember those days. They were the bomb!! Is that an SCism? Yes, it was a "real" threat back in the days. Although none of the homes I lived in had bomb shelters, they were not unheard of. Boy, looking back, how scary hu. I automatically think bombs, war.....equal Russia. TIS

3 Days without a cigarette so far. Longest I've gone since I was 13. Cravings are killing me But I'm finding it's just a case of keeping my mind occupied. Whisper!!! I am so proud of you!! That's great news! Those who manage 14 days without a cigarette have a much higher success rate. And if you falter, DON'T GIVE UP!! Just smoke a few, and then set a new quit date. Eventually, it will stick. Keep it up, my friend! And feel free to bitch here all you want.

My mother was a young girl during the WWII and every family with a garden had an Anderson bomb shelter in it. Although she was in Newcastle and not London, famous for the Blitz, the Germans dropped bombs every night because she lived right next to the shipyards which the Germans were trying to destroy. She was 8/9 and still remembers the dread of the siren going! I can't imagine the fear from that. My uncle was stationed in England during WWII and he met my aunt there. She used to tell me the stories of the blitz (she was in her early 20s then) and how she and her family would take cover in shelters. Just hearing the stories would scare me.

I have friends who are from England. Kenneth is around 70, and he lived in London during the Blitz. His home was near a munitions dump, so his neighborhood was bombed frequently. Obviously he remembers the bombing, but he also remembers the following little song that we try to get him to sing aloud in bars after a few:
Hitler, he's only got one ball. Goering has two but very small. Himmler has something sim'lar But poor Goebbels Has no balls At all!!! My parents taught me that song when i was a kid SB It is amazing how many people still know it as well. As you say, definitely a great drinking song! Back in the day though when they were stuck in the shelters with no electricity or modern day gadgets to amuse them, they had to amuse themselves.Hence a lot of singing and pouting of stiff upper lips
I would rather die on my feet than live on my knees!
