I watched Philadelphia on Friday night and the scene where Tom Hanks is talking through the Oprea song..amazing and powerful scene and im sure this was the scene which sealed his oscar...

You know those movies that are kind of "out there" and far fetched, yet good. That's the way I feel about "They Live" with Roddy Piper (an ex-wrestler I understand, but can't say I know him except for this movie). Never saw the movie in the theater, but rented and really enjoyed it. I'll even watch just this one scene if I see it's on tv.

Anyway, to my knowledge this is one of the longest fight scenes in a movie. Just a brief synopsis. The movie is about aliens taking over but are hard to spot because they look/act human on the surface. If you put on the glasses you can see if someone is an alien because they look skeletal, if not they are human.

DeNiro, your post reminded me of the scene from "Shawshank Redemption" when Andy Dufresne locks himself in the office and plays the opera music over the loudspeaker. All of the inmates just freeze in their tracks as the music washes over them.

In "Without A Trace",

I'm glad you mentioned this movie. I have been wanting to see it for a long time but keep forgetting. I'm going to add it to my NetFlix queue right now.

A few random scenes stand out in my recent memory:

That near-end scene from "Without a Trace" (that Sicilian Babe mentioned) always gives me goosebumps.

From "Taking Chance" - midway through the movie when the marine's casket is unloaded from the plane and the airport workers give an improptu salute by standing silently until the process was finished.

The stateroom scene from "A Night at the Opera" (the Marx Brothers). Without a doubt the funniest moment ever on the silver screen.

Talladega Nights when Cal steals Ricky's wife.

I agree thats a great scene, its like for one moment they where all free men..

The diner scene in Heat, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro show each other what they're made of. My favorite quote is also from that movie it is Al Pacino's line: "Who? Who? What are you, a f***in' owl?"

One of the scenes I really like comes near the end of The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly. Where Eli Wallach's character is running through the cemetary and the song The Ecstasy of Gold is playing.

The Ecstasy of Gold is such an amazing piece. If anyone here hasn't seen The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly I highly recomend it, you won't be disappointed.

The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly is one of my all time favorites. I've seen it about 13 times and with each time I love it more. First time I saw it, I was hypnotized by The Ecstasy of Gold.

I love this film too.

I love the ending of "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman" when Cicely Tyson (as a 110 year old woman) slowly walks up to the "Whites Only" water fountain and takes a sip. Very powerful scene and a wonderful ending to a powerful story.

The quote that I use most often from that movie is:

"It places the lotion in the basket or else it gets the hose."

Hee!! Our dog got out from under the fence this past weekend and rolled around in a nearby swamp before coming home. My daughter had to hose her off and she kept saying to the dog, "It's puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again!"

There are several moments in "Princess Bride" that I love.

Inigo Montoya and his search for the six-fingered man: "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

The entire scene with Carol Kane as Valerie and Billy Crystal as Miracle Max: "He's only MOSTLY dead."

And Wesley's "To the pain..." speech to Prince Humberdink.

As for "Jaws", who can forget Chief Brody bitching about ladling chum, and then seeing the shark's head emerge from the water? The way that Roy Scheider played that scene was great, walking slowly, completely stunned, into the cabin, cigarette dangling from his mouth, then saying to Quint, "We're gonna need a bigger boat."

Roy Scheider also had some great moments in "All That Jazz", a very underrated film.

Jaws had a lot of understated, but potent lines, like the ones you and Mary Cas mentioned.

I always liked Quint's calm demeanor when the shark was ripping holes in the boat and the lamp fell and he told Brody, "Put the fire out, chief."

By the way I like your daughter's sense of humor in washing the dog.

Ah, she takes after her father!

I also love when Hooper is trying to get the Chief to pose at the end of the pulpit so that he has something in his photograph of the shark for "scale". Chief Brody tells him, "Foreground my ass!".

I don't think I've ever seen the entire film, but that I've seen that closing scene a few times and it brings me to tears. It is extremely powerful. The pure altruism. The "wanna have a catch" scene is a choker too; simplistic, poignant.

I don't know why I remember this particular quote now, but from War Of The Roses...Kathleen Turner to Michael Douglas:


When I watch you eat, when I see you asleep, when I look at you lately...I just want to smash your face in!

Remember the very very end? Talk about a dark comedy. Anyway, I love that quote.
