Regardless of how true what i read was, I once heard that after FFC saw Scorseses' Mean Streets, he wanted him to step in as director for the sequel. What do you think it wouldve been like? Franky, while coppoloa made GF 1-3, The Conversation, and Apocolypse now, I cant remember him making a good film in ages ( I havent seen Tetro). Scorseses, on the other hand has made dozens of great movies. Mean STreets, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Casino and many others.

Im sure it would have been much grittier. And by that, I mean a lot more urban; more shots of the city, etc... One of Scorsese's great strengths has always been his love affair with the City of New York. To be more precise, the dark side of the City of New York.
Plus, I think we would have seen more of the Mafia at its street level, as in "Goodfellas" and "Mean Streets." Two of my favorite films of all-time, but they had a much different look than Coppola's films. I don't think it would have worked. Agreed PB. I could not have said it better myelf. Great as he is, The Godfather trilogy did not need Joe Pesci.

One of the prime factors in the GF mystique is that the main characters seem so far removed from the street-level nitty-gritty. I also think the typical Scorcese classic rock soundtrack would have ruined the ambience.
