That little girl that was kidnapped when she was 11 years old, Jaycee Duggan? My daughter e-mailed me to tell me her mother, until recently worked at the same school my daughter did. Anyway, I'm sure you've all at least heard this girl was abucted, lived in tents outside the house and the man who abducted her fathered two children by her. It's so disgusting and sad. I'm sure every parent who has a missing child is given a bit of hope, but this story is truly awful. Yet, thankfully the girl is alive if not messed up in the head. My mother said that she saw on the news tonight that the police had received a complaint that there were children living in tents in the backyard, but they never went past the gate. I haven't heard that, but can you imagine if that's true?? The County Sheriff admitted that his office "fell down" on the job. The next door neighbor complained to police three years ago about strange noises (of children) coming from the backyard, but the police supposedly found nothing.

In their defense, he might have hidden them while the cops were there, but I would imagine that a complaint involving a twice-convicted sex offender and children would have been investigated pretty well. Could he have (quickly) hid evidence of some kids living in that backyard? I don't think so... it was poor police work.

I heard earlier that one of the neighbors would question the tents, and told her husband it sounded like kids were back there. Her husband, more or less, told her to to stay out of it. My daughter called, said the Jaycee's mom was secretary at their school and transferred to another nearby school. She said everyone at the school plans to do something for the family, but not sure what. I heard earlier that the girl,of course was glad to be home, but harbored a lot of guilt for bonding with this guy. Can you imagine? TIS

I heard earlier that the girl,of course was glad to be home, but harbored a lot of guilt for bonding with this guy. Can you imagine? From the little reading I've done on this (hostage type situations) that is a natural reaction - to form some sort of bond with the captor. Poor kid was robbed of her childhood and treated like an animal. She's NEVER gonna be "right" in the head.

Mig, I haven't read anything more about the kids. Man, that poor girl, her kids, not to mention the girls' entire family, have some major adjusting (and therapy) to work thru this whole situation. TIS

TIS, I've been following this story the last few days. That poor family. My mother said that she saw on the news tonight that the police had received a complaint that there were children living in tents in the backyard, but they never went past the gate. I haven't heard that, but can you imagine if that's true??
Anderson Cooper from CNN interviewed Elizabeth Smart and her dad about what Jaycee can expect to feel. While I appreciate the horror that Elizabeth experienced, she was missing for 9 months not 18 years, and she didn't have a child older than she was when she disappeared which was fathered by her kidnapper. The strange thing about it is the girl was kidnapped at age 11 by a oakland guy and still stayed with the dude for 18 years. She never once thought of turning the child molester in before? Sounds like a real strange gal.

The County Sheriff admitted that his office "fell down" on the job. The next door neighbor complained to police three years ago about strange noises (of children) coming from the backyard, but the police supposedly found nothing. Doesn't that happen alot where abused kids fall through the cracks cuz children services don't do thir jobs?

How sad. It seems I just heard this girl was missing and suddently she' found dead (assuming it's her). How awful for the parent. I still think of Natalie Holloway and how her mother tried so hard to find her to no avail. Just imagine, as a parent, not knowing where your child is? Not able to put her in a final resting place. What a heavy load to carry year after year your whole life. TIS

A loving 85 year old grandmother was killed and then her house was set on fire in an attempt to cover their tracks... Did they say, "why"? (i.e. robbery gone bad)

A couple of tragic tales.
Early Sat. morning there was an accident on the bridge connecting downtown harrisburg with the neighboring county. A cab driver from Ghana, who was working 3 jobs to support his wife and 2 young sons, and a social worker, his fare were killed. the worker's husband survived the crash that was caused by an oncoming car that crossed lanes...because the driver was texting. The driver was unscathed.
A woman, who gained publicity and created a controversy a couple years ago for carrying an open firearm wherever she went (kids' soccer games, the daycare that she ran, the movies, etc., was found shot to death along with her husband.

I remember her, Klyd. They covered her in the New York papers: Pistol Packin' Soccer Mom. Sad, but I'll bet she was one of those staunch, Sarah Palin type Republicans, who swore that "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." Well, now she knows firsthand.

The following letter to the editor in my paper this morning about gun ownership, and how it makes the world a safer place, makes absolutely no sense to me. The more guns that people own, the safer the world will be??? A Haverstraw homeowner's judicious use of a firearm, as reported in Monday's article, "Haverstraw man shoots two home intruders," was justified under the Second Amendment. His use of that firearm was within the law. Kudos to that gentleman; these miscreant individuals just may think twice about doing this again.
On the same day, another article, "A new presidency drives up gun sales," bolsters the fear of the American citizen whose rights are threatened by the liberals. In that article, Jackie Hilly, executive director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, insists that gun ownership will lead to catastrophic results, citing "scientific evidence." Not so, Ms. Hilly. Studies by major law enforcement entities have shown that the reverse is true.
Many studies conducted by major universities confirm that gun ownership is related to a lower incidence of crime.
Ms. Hilly, it's time that NYAGV own up to the fact that gun owners do help lower the crime rate.
