Stars Say 'Sopranos' Movie May Be Close
Updated: Wednesday, 05 Aug 2009, 3:32 PM EDT Published : Wednesday, 05 Aug 2009, 12:53 PM EDT
By MIKE BRODY
(MYFOX NATIONAL) - Almost immediately after "The Sopranos" aired its final episode in 2007, speculation began that a movie version of the hit HBO series was in the works.
Producer David Chase hasn't confirmed the project and HBO has continually denied the existence of a script. One popular rumor to date has been that James Gandolfini, who plays mafia boss Tony Soprano in the series, has been reluctant to sign on for the big-screen version.
But now two of the stars of the series are saying a "Sopranos" movie hitting the big screen is close to being a reality, according to the New York Daily News .
"I don't think it's that at all," says Lorraine Bracco about Gandolfini's supposed cold feet. "I think it's really trying to get the right script. Without the right script, it's really not worth doing."
Bracco added that many of the cast members have encouraged Chase to "get the script." She also hopes to make more than one movie. "I want us to be like 'Sex and the City' or 'The Bourne Identity,'" she said.
Meanwhile, Steven Van Zandt , whose character Silvio Dante was struggling for his life in the show's abrupt ending, recently told a Belfast newspaper that his character "is still alive."

He's still alive. They shot him five times, and he's still alive.

Of course once I hear Gandolfini confirm, I'll be optimistic. Maybe we can have our next meet at the NYC opening hu? The BB crime famly Btw, I know own all seasons except Season 6, part II, but hey, tha's as good as done. And, JL, or anyone, do they still have the Sopranos tour? TIS

I sure understand in most cases it can be overkill, and admit sometimes I get a little too anxious for "more" of a series or franchise and many times they shouldn't be made. However, I am one of the very few who think the Sopranos ending sucked. It was NOT complete and did disappoint.I know, I know.....but I have not yet been convinced by what some are saying is so obvious. Either that or I'll have to admit that I am just not as wise as many others who have the answers. I plan to watch the entire seasons, and will give it yet another shot (I've seen the finale abut 3/4 times already). Anyway, I'm all for more in this case. TIS

If they make a movie and set it after the series ended (as opposed to, say, a flashback), it can only disappoint the viewers who were content to write their own ending for Tony.
If you were of the thought that Tony rode off into the sunset, you had every right to believe that. If you were of the thought that Tony went face-ass down in a bowl of onion rings, with his wife and children looking on in horror, then you had the same right to believe that. Chase gave everyone the freedom to pick their own ending for Tony. A movie takes that away from half the audience.
And honestly, I think this is much adieu about nothing. The only ones making noise about this are the actors who are out of work and/or hopelessly typecast (namely Lorraine Bracco and Steven Van Zandt). I saw Edie Falco in an interview for "Nurse Betty" two nights ago on EW. She called the reports of a Sopranos movie "silly." And Gandolfini has repeatedly said he will "not" play Tony Soprano again. But never say never, not in Hollywood, where money talks.
We'll have to wait and see.

I had heard a while back that Gandolfini was not interested and very well may be the case. I guess where some are content to make-up there own ending or, visualize how they wanted it to end, I want to actually "see" how it ended. At least in this particular tv series. Don't know why, but I do. I don't accept that Tony went down in a blaze and I don't necessarily accept, they lived happily ever after either. Maybe Chase's idea was just as you say....everyone decides on their own. To me, it's a copout. As though he couldn't think of a "real"ending, so left it to the viewers. I love the show from day one and was hooked on it immediately. I still love the show, but am disppointed in how it ended. We have to agree to disagree I think PB. TIS

Oh, and your point about the other actors needing work? Could very well be true. I haven't seen any of them in anything. I know Falco has the series but have never seen it, nor do I know how it's doing rating wise. Did I hear Gandolfini was on Boadway??? Actually I haven't seen him much either. I saw a movie last nigh with Steve Buscemi (Domestic Disturbance with John Travolta) and it reminded me of the Sopranos. Oh and Meadow and AJ are totally out of sight that I am aware of. Yea, I miss the family. TIS

Sorry for a third installment but I was reading a blog written a year or so ago about a possible Soprano movie and one of the bloggers was replying to all those who said "no no no", commenting that right after the finale aired and the they were blogging, how everyone at the end, was like "WTF?" and Hu?" and asking "what just happened?" Anyway, I was looking for the season 6 part two finale thread that we posted as we were watching the end. I wanted to see what we all were saying at the time. Maybe I didn't go far enough back, but I didn't see it. Maybe somebody can refresh it and put it to the top. Btw, I loved Sunday nights here. The Soprano threads were totally hopping, especially if it was an exceptional episode. Thanks TIS

So many scenes that were good. One of my favorite was Tony killing Ralphie. However, as serious as the show could be, it was also hilarious as well like Chritopher sitting on Aids dog. Or Paulie killing that old lady (forgot her name) TIS

Correction, James Gandolfini in an interview actually did say that he would love to reprise the role of Tony Soprano, it was either in a 2008 or 2009 interview.

To be honest oh well if that debate is destroyed, a Sopranos movie would be the best thing ever.
