The President was in College Station, Texas today speaking with George H.W Bush at the Bush Presidential Library at Texas A&M University. The occasion is marked by the 20th anniversary of a national volunteer organization whose name escapes me at the moment...

You know, I always thought Bush Sr. was a good President. He just got fucked by the fact that he paid the economic price for the "good years" that Reagan earlier rather enjoyed.

I liked him, Ronnie. I voted for him in '92 and was, at the time, a little surprised that he wasn't re-elected, being an incumbent who did a nice job with the military during the Gulf War. And although Dick Cheney turned out to be a war monger as VP, he served well as Secretary of Defense under Bush Sr.

The problem was that in the 1990s after the USSR collapsed, foreign/military affairs wasn't that pressing of an issue. Nor really was again until 9/11. The economy was almost everything*, and in '92 Bush Sr. came off as a dried old raisin to the young casanova hillbilly Clinton. Plus Perot didn't help, nor did Pat Buchanan's ideological party nomination challenge.

Maybe its his son Dubya's reign that has colored up his father's term more favorably in retrospect, but it seems like both Presidencies featured serious militaristic endeavors overseas, except Bush Sr. seems like to at least be logical and practical in pulling them off publicly and behind the scenes.

He was greatly criticized for not going after the retreating Iraqi forces and "finish the job," but perhaps he knew that unilaterally that he neither had International support and well the fucking mess that occupying a power-void Iraq would become.

READY TO REVOLT: Oath Keepers pledges to prevent dictatorship in United States. Group asks police and military to lay down arms in response to orders deemed unlawful

Launched in March by Las Vegan Stewart Rhodes, Oath Keepers bills itself as a nonpartisan group of current and retired law enforcement and military personnel who vow to fulfill their oaths to the Constitution.

More specifically, the group's members, which number in the thousands, pledge to disobey orders they deem unlawful, including directives to disarm the American people and to blockade American cities. By refusing the latter order, the Oath Keepers hope to prevent cities from becoming "giant concentration camps," a scenario the 44-year-old Rhodes says he can envision happening in the coming years.

Report: Secret Service strained to protect Obama

An internal congressional report questioning the ability of the Secret Service to continue fulfilling its duties was leaked to the Boston Globe. The report says the Secret Service is strained by a drastic increase in threats to President Obama, coupled with deep budget cuts. Some are speculating that the agency may need to relinquish all or part of its roles in protecting the country's financial machinery in order to focus resources on the protection of the president and other high-profile leaders.

Why is it that the only right wingers getting their opinions heard across the media are the fucking nutjobs?

Now don't be stomping on this guy's right to "bear arms." I have no idea why anyone needs 43 guns, but would like to know what guidelines or what kind of "check" they supposedly do on these people? My guess.....none. I'm sure most people who own guns are responsible, BUT it's people who threaten to kill and have 43 guns at home,that we need to worry about. She's been in and out of the news because of her bankruptcy, Tis. She's being sued by just about everyone who ever had her picture taken by her.

I agree it's a beautiful photograph. As should any portrait of a First Family be. Has no bearing on the competence of any President.

That aside, I remember being amazed that Leibowitz actually asked Queen Elizabeth to remove her tiara during a sitting (so was the Queen!!). I don't think I even believed it until watching the exchanged which had been filmed for a documentary.

The situation I know about is that she took out a $24 million loan in order to consolidate other debts (including taxes) and had to put up her homes and rights to her work and art as collateral. But the lender agreed to extend the loan and sell her back at least some of the rights to her pictures and property.

I don't know why someone at her age and career stage would be in such evidently dire financial straits to begin with. I heard there might have been some financial issues surrounding the estate of her partner, Susan Sontag.

Someone once told me that no matter how well you think you're doing someone else looks at your success with disdain and no matter how much you think you're struggling someone else would be happy to be in your shoes..

She had Miley Cyrus take off more than a tiara for her pictures.

By the way, it is a beautiful picture of the First Family.

Yeah, that was kind of revolting, Klyd. Leibowitz is obviously a brilliant artist, but a bit of a flake. But I guess the two have never been independent of each other.
