I'm pretty sure that when my grandmother and her sisters finished sewing in a sweatshop all day, they might have relaxed on the subway ride home and spoke to one another in Italian. Yes, it was a priority for them to learn this new language, but it was only natural for them to speak their native tongue to their family and friends.
