I don't think Sonny would have had resentments like Fredo did. Sonny was much more "balanced", for lack of a better word. He was really good at what he did ("short term action"). He enjoyed it. I think it would have been closer to a team of equals with more mutual respect.

Sonny would have been impressed with Michael's book smarts and mainstream connections, even as he ruthlessly mocked him for it. And Michael would have admired (and used) Sonny's ferocity even if he chided him from it time to time.

I think it would have ended up something like the two brothers Dominic and Eduardo in Prizzi's Honor-occasionally a little squabbling but nothing serious because each would have respected (and needed) the other's area of expertise.

Fredo HAD no area of expertise which left him free to ruminate on all sorts of real or imagined insults.

"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives."
Winter is Coming

Now this is the Law of the Jungle—as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.
