Maybe different parts of Italy/Sicily prepared it different ways. My grandmother's came with her from Sicily I'm sure. I never made it, but I remember seeing her preparing a dough mixture and deep frying it (it'd come out in odd shapes)for not very long. It seemed to cook very fast and I believe she sprinkled it with sugar or powdered sugar.
