Why murder the man you just asked to provide you with something that you cannot provide yourself if you believe that such provision is essential to your efforts? Tom was probably right about the future, but it was the present with which Sollozzo was concerned. If Barzini and/or Tattaglia had adequate judicial connections, then the need for Vito's assistance was obviated.
