Friday, June 18, 2010 By TANYA EISERER / The Dallas Morning News
A Dallas police officer who faces a misdemeanor charge after she fired a revolver in a squad car during a drunken off-duty incident has been released on bond from the Dallas County Jail. Officer Kelly Beemer, 27, has been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of a criminal investigation. Beemer was released Thursday on $1,000 bond.
About 11 p.m. Wednesday, Beemer was at Lee Harvey's bar in South Dallas, where she had been drinking. Her friends decided she shouldn't drive herself home, police said. Two on-duty patrol officers came to the bar to help get an incoherent Beemer under control, police said. About 11:20 p.m., as the squad car approached the intersection of Gaston Avenue and Abrams Road, Beemer began demanding that the officer driving stop the vehicle. She pulled a revolver from her ankle holster and fired into the floorboard. Fellow officers then disarmed her

Lakehurst is about 10 mins from me: Armed man, gunshot sounds cause NJ base lockdownBy GEOFF MULVIHILL, Associated Press Writer – 1 hr 10 mins ago
LAKEHURST, N.J. – Something that sounded like gunfire and a delivery driver with a gun led to a one-hour lockdown at a Navy base Monday. A base official said there were no injuries and no real danger.
Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst spokeswoman Angel Lopez said security concerns were raised at around 9:30 a.m. at two different base entrances — the base's main gate and the commercial-traffic gate for the part of the installation once known as the Lakehurst Naval Engineering Station.
At the commercial entrance, someone reported hearing gunfire. At about the same time, guards were questioning a delivery driver who was trying to enter through the main gate.
Most drivers who regularly make deliveries know to go to the commercial gate, but this one didn't, Lopez said. What's more, when guards asked the driver if he had any weapons, he said he did.
The man possessed the gun legally but was cited for trying to bring it on base and was released later Monday morning, Lopez said. She said she did not have the driver's name.
Meanwhile, the search for someone who had fired shots at the commercial gate turned up nothing.
Because the two things happened at the same time, base security forces called for a lockdown, Lopez said. For about an hour, no vehicles could get in or out of the naval center and people on base had to stay in their buildings.
She said the base was back to normal by 11 a.m., but the investigation into what sounded like gunfire continued.
Last year, the Army's Fort Dix, McGuire Air Force Base and Lakehurst Naval Air Engineering Station were merged to make the military's first three-branch base. The 65-square-mile combined base stretches through farmland and forests in central New Jersey.
Lakehurst is perhaps best known as the spot where the airship Hindenberg exploded in 1937.
More recently, federal authorities said it was a target being considered by a group of men from the Philadelphia area who were convicted in 2008 of plotting to kill military personnel. No attack was carried out in that case.
___ Associated Press writer Shawn Marsh in Trenton, N.J., contributed to this report.

This lovely little story recently got alot of attention in Ottawa. The kid, Ryan, went to the same high school as I did for about a year but was a grade below me. The reason he was only there for a year was because he was expelled when he got caught selling video to other students of a girl at our school being inappropriate with a a comb handle, so obviously this is an ongoing problem ctvottawa.ca
Ryan Earl McCann, 20, was sentenced to eight years in prison for exploiting young girls over the Internet.
McCann ran a bogus online chat company called "Talen's Playground," where he told the girls he would pay them thousands to commit sex acts in front of their web cams. Photos were also used to coerce the girls.
Ryan Earl McCann left a "trail of scarred and emotionally fragile young women," said Ontario Court Justice Celynne Dorval .
"It is clear that it is at the sense of control generated by these offences to which the defendant is addicted. The offences are predatory," added Justice Dorval. The female victims, aged 14 to 21, were recruited from online social networking sites and chat programs such as Facebook and MSN for friendly talks that eventually turned ugly. There were 19 named complainants, and three more who did not want to come forward. Ten of the girls were under 16.
The Kanata man pleaded guilty earlier this month to 26 charges in total, including extorting young girls and women to make pornographic videos, producing child pornography, invitation to sexual touching, harassment and uttering death threats.
The guilty plea means there will not be a trial, and the girls who did come forward will not have to give full accounts.
The verdict was also affected by the fact that McCann used special networking and hacked into the girls' facebook sites, as well.
McCann can also no longer contact anyone under 16 using a computer.

At first I thought it was just a few heavy guys running down the hallway but it went on a little longer than that... Tom Greenwood / The Detroit News Detroit -- No, you're not imagining it: We did have an earthquake. According to the United States Geological Survey, the Michigan/Ontario border felt an earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter Scale at 1:41 p.m. today. "There was an event that measured in the mid to low 5 range on the Richter Scale," said USGS seismologist Paul Earle. According to Earle, the first indications placed the epicenter somewhere around the Michigan/Ontario border. A few moments later it was established on the Ontario/Quebec border, about 33 miles away from Ottawa. The USGC web site at http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/Quakes/us2010xwa7.php said the earthquake occurred almost 12 miles below the surface. According to Earle, the USGS has a website at http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/dyfi/ where citizens can post the who, what, when, where and "wow" of the earthquake

But at least I had a better day than our former mayor.Kwame Kilpatrick illegally used the nonprofit Kilpatrick Civic Fund like a piggy bank to pay for crisis consultants, a Cadillac, trips -- even summer camp for his kids -- a federal grand jury said Wednesday, charging the former mayor with 19 counts of fraud and tax evasion. The chargesMail and wire fraud: Kilpatrick faces 13 counts for allegedly using the mail and telephone to raise money for his tax-exempt Kilpatrick Civic Fund under the false assertion that it would be used for charitable purposes. Authorities allege he actually used fund money for personal and political expenses. Penalty: Up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Filing false tax returns: Kilpatrick faces five counts for allegedly failing to report taxable income of $470,951 in the form of cash and private jet flights from unspecified sources, and personal expenses paid by the civic fund from 2003 to 2007. Penalty: Up to three years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Income tax evasion: Kilpatrick faces one count for allegedly failing to report $171,751 in income in the form of cash and private jet flights from unspecified sources, and personal expenses paid by the civic fund in 2008. Penalty: Up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

We need to separate the Chicago canal system from the Great Lakes. Carp found past barriers, but locks will stay open Cox says he's exploring new legal action BY TINA LAM FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER The first Asian carp found past electric barriers built to stop the fish from invading Lake Michigan will not lead to lock closures, federal and state officials in Illinois said Wednesday. Officials said they found a bighead carp Tuesday that was nearly 3 feet long and weighed about 20 pounds in Lake Calumet, 6 miles from Lake Michigan in southeast Chicago. The fish, thought to be 3 to 4 years old, was caught live in a net by a commercial fisherman hired to scour the lake for Asian carp as part of an ongoing search-and-destroy mission. It was old enough to reproduce. "Our worst fears have been realized," Attorney General Mike Cox said in a statement. Cox filed lawsuits last year, along with other states, to close the locks at least temporarily, but the U.S. Supreme Court rejected lock closures and the lawsuit itself. Cox said he's exploring possible new legal action. Several members of Congress called on President Barack Obama to order lock closures and take other aggressive measures to halt the progress of carp into the Great Lakes. "This was so tragically predictable," said U.S. Rep. Candice Miller, R-Harrison Township. She and others have raised concerns about the carp for years. "We were told we were overreacting," she said. U.S. Rep. Dave Camp, R-Midland, sponsor of a bill that would immediately close locks, said, "The president stated there was a zero-tolerance policy in regards to invasive species like Asian carp. It's time he made good on that statement."

British woman Caroline Cartwright pleads guilty to loud sex after neighbors - and postman - complain BY David Boroff DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
Tuesday, December 15th 2009, 10:49 PM Minchin/APNeighbors - and the postman - have complained about the noise Caroline Cartwright and husband Steve make during sex. A British woman is in trouble for enjoying sex a little too much.
Caroline Cartwright, 48, has pleaded guilty to anti-social behavior for ignoring a noise abatement notice from the courts. In fact, she admits to violating a civil order three different times. The order had banned Caroline and husband Steve from "shouting, screaming or vocalization at such a level as to be a statutory nuisance," according to the BBC.
The Cartwrights live in Washington, south of Newscastle in northeast England. Neighbors - and even the postman - have complained about the noise, according to the BBC and other reports. "The noise sounds like they are both in considerable pain," neighbor Rachel O'Connor testified. "I cannot describe the noise. I have never ever heard anything like it."
Cartwright argued that she was unable to control the noise but had tried to "minimize the situation" by having sex in the morning, the Press Association reports. According to the BBC, World Health Organization guidelines say 30 decibels is enough to cause sleep disturbance. The BBC reports that the Sunderland City Council told the court they had recorded noise levels of 47 decibels at the Cartwrights - using equipment installed in a neighbor's house.
Caroline Cartwright will be sentenced on January 18.

Hard to generalize, Oli, but... The Upper East Side of Manhattan was a borderline slum until the mid-Fifties, when the city tore down the Third Avenue Elevated line, which had blighted the entire area. That stimulated a huge boom in high-end apartment and condo building. Then it became the chi-chi neighborhood of NYC.
If by "lower West Side" you mean, say, the Battery to Greenwich Village: Battery Park City, the major housing development since the Seventies, seems to have recovered from the effects of 9/11. The rest of the lower West Side is pretty stable, except that most of Little Italy has been absorbed into Chinatown. The upper West Side is, as ever, a haven of old apartment buildings and various ethnic intelligencia.
Into the Sixties, Germans were the predominant ethnic group in the Upper East Side (Yorkville), while Central European Jews were their counterpart in the Upper West Side. Greenwich Village's core was predominately Italian. Those are very broad generalizations. The biggest trend throughout NYC is that the real estate boom gentrified just about every former "slum." Every tumbledown six-story building in almost every neighborhood was turned into a condo or co-op, fetching incredible prices. Money broke down all the ethnic distinctions--if you can afford to live in Manhattan, doesn't matter who you are; the only color that matters is green. Despite the burst real estate bubble, it still costs a fortune to live in Manhattan, and plenty of places in Brooklyn that used to be considered seedy. The city-owned housing projects are about the only real estate that haven't been affected.

Here's a story from my hometown, aka the Land of the World's Stupidest Criminals: Police arrested Steve Cox, 35, after a 40-mile chase following a traffic stop. Police put a spiked stick across the road that blew out all of his tires, but he kept going, even after a tire ran off the rim, and finally stopped when the rim disintegrated. After he was cuffed he told deputies he knew they were following him, but said he had a lot on his mind and did not feel like stopping.

We have an armed gunman on the loose in our region. This sort of stuff does not happen very often in the UK so it is big news over here. Raoul Moat, an angry, bodybuilding type came out of prison to find his girlfriend with another chap. He killed the new chap, shot his ex, and then shot a cop. He has been on the run for 5 days and is apparently living in the woods outside the city. We have armed police everywhere and they cannot find him. He keeps sending the police letters telling them he is going to kill them all. I think he may be deranged somewhat........

Wow, that is scary Yogi! It does sound like he snapped. I imagine these kinds of cases are extra hard on the police because when someone "goes off" like that you just don't know how far they'll go. I hope he is captured soon. TIS
