I'm awaiting my invitation from Bruce Springsteen to visit his farmhouse in Colts Neck. When that happens, I will be sure to stop at Delicious Orchards. Yours must have been lost in the mail along with mine. I bought a David's Cookies peanut butter pie at Costco and hated it. Other than that, I honestly can't think of anything I've bought there that I didn't enjoy.

Edit: and how can you do better than their $5 rotisserie chicken?? It would cost me more to buy a chicken, bring it home and cook it. I don't know how they do it for $5!

I teach theatrical makeup at a local college and clown makeup is one of the topics I cover in my course. Around two years ago, when I mentioned the upcoming lessons to my class, one girl became quite agitated. She said she was deathly afraid of clowns and had been this way since she was very young. There was no way in the world that she would be able to participate in applying clown makeup - and, for that matter, absolutely no way that she would even be in the same room with someone wearing a clown face. She explained the origin of her phobia, and I must admit I had never heard anything like it: When she was a little girl, her father took her to see a small circus that was performing in Brooklyn. A clown was in the ring, and he suddenly noticed someone in the audience he disliked in the extreme - the clown then pulled a gun from within his costume and fired at the man, hitting him with at least one bullet. At first the audience thought it was part of the show, but when they realized this was a gun-wielding maniac clown, there was general pandemonium. My student was absolutely certain that this was the way it happened. Ever since, she said, she had a terror of clowns of all types. Now, to get back on topic: I know, I know.... I just couldn't resist. Signor V.

Spent some time in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country, and got hold of some homemade habanero dill pickles, which were amazingly hot and delicious. I was wondering and was gonna look up some recipes to try with my latest crop of habaneros (besides the usual chili, stir fry and salsa). I'm not sure about habanero pickles, tho... interesting...

In Chicagoland, we call them "saing-wiches". Here we call them "sarnies"....

I'm in trouble. Big trouble! They just opened a Sicilian Foccaceria 2 min. from my house! They make my favorite sicilian delicacy.....Panelle Specials! I had one from there the other day and it was one of the best that I've ever had. Store info, please?

Well.....there's the original Joe's of Avenue U which has been around for many many years and is famous for their Vastede, Panelle Specials and Sicilian Rice Balls..... ....now they've opened a 2nd location on Staten Island..... Always loved Joe's Of Ave U Panelle Special. But now I found a place called Joe Bellas who's Panelle special is just fantastic!

Sad to report that I just discovered that the restaurant Vinny's II on Kings Highway in Brooklyn is no more. It had been a mainstay of the neighborhood for many years. On Don Cardi's recommendation I took Signora V. there in 2006 for what would turn out to be our last anniversary together. A very memorable evening. The reason for its demise? Haven't a clue. I passed by there a few days ago and found that it is now a Bar & Grill with a completely different name. Signor V.

SV, the local Italian deli by me across the street closed up, too -- very recently. I'm kinda pissed! They had great cooked food (not cheap, but delicious homemade), plus they were an outlet for Pastosa (that Cardi knows about!) pasta that I don't know where to get any more. Sucks....!

Forgot to mention a couple weeks ago I tried sardines for the first time! The idea never really appealed to me, tho I do like anchovies. My friend Meredith liked them, so I got some for her to prove it to me -- we've been eating them ever since, and even expanding to try others like canned mackerel and I think herring is next (I like that, too, out of a jar; haven't tried it in a can). "In water" anything is the most tasteless, and everything just tastes like tuna for the most part. But "in olive oil" or even canned with hot peppers or mustard are a tasty treat for sure, great on crackers. The mackerel was in water, so nothing special. Tried smoked oysters which were good, but too smoky for my taste. But all in all, I'm a canned (exotic) fish fan now!

Forgot to mention a couple weeks ago I tried sardines for the first time! Like you, I wasn't big on sardines until four years ago, when I decided to work on a Sicilian recipe for pasta with sardines. I was using either ziti or rigatoni (I forget) and there were also raisins added. Can't for the life of me remember where I first found the recipe that I was experimenting with - maybe it was the Sicilian Culture website? I had just about gotten the recipe where I wanted it when other matters forced me to lay it aside. But, since I write down virtually everything that I do in the kitchen, if I can find the recipe I'll post it - definitely would make a nice dinner for two (or one, or three or...you get the idea ) Signor V.

No-bake Gnudi tastes like lasagne without the noodles
Every once in a while when I see the name of a recipe, I'm intrigued and then I prepare it. I'll review the contents to be sure that I like most of the ingredients — black olives and a lot of dill are definite no-no's — and then I'll make the dish.
That's what happened when I ran across this gnudi recipe. Even though I didn't know how to pronounce the name of the dish or know exactly what I was eating, I wanted to be surprised. And I was.
This recipe doesn't require any baking, frying or oil, but instead uses boiling water to cook the dish. I thought it tasted like lasagna without the noodles. And that's exactly what gnudi (pronounced nu-dee), which means nude in Italian , is — ravioli, lasagna or any other dumpling-like Italian dish, minus the noodles. I thought it tasted pretty good, and I think if you love Italian, you'll probably like gnudi. Gnudi
Adapted from Giada DeLaurentis' show "Everyday Italian" on the Food Network.
• 1/4 cup whole milk ricotta cheese
• 1 (10-ounce) package frozen spinach, thawed and squeezed dry
• 1/2 cup grated Parmesan
• 1 egg
• 1 egg yolk
• 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
• 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour, plus 1/8 cup for coating
• 1/2 cup store-bought marinara sauce, heated
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
In a large bowl, mix ricotta, spinach, Parmesan cheese, egg and egg yolk. Stir in nutmeg, salt, pepper and flour. Form mixture into small, flattened balls.
Coat the formed gnudi in flour, tapping off the excess, and slide them into the boiling water. Be careful not to overcrowd the pan; work in batches if necessary. Remove the gnudi using a slotted spoon after they float to the top and have cooked for about 4 minutes.
Arrange gnudi on a platter and lightly drizzle with marinara sauce. Makes 8. Serves 4.

• 1 (10-ounce) package frozen spinach, thawed and squeezed dry There's one of my big no-no's unless I wanna taste grass clippings! I'd rather sauté some baby spinach then chop it up. But otherwise, the gnudi sounds interesting, thanks!
