It's absurdly humorous that Glenn Beck, who is a Mormon , has the audacity to say that the President is not a real Christian. There are some rather serious doctrinal differences between The Church of LDS and "mainline" Christianity, to the point where some other Christians claim that LDS is not Christianity at all. I can't believe Beck wants to go down that path. Beck is a moron, but we already knew that. I'm just shocked that he doesn't have an adviser to quash such inane comments. And not to get into a religious debate, but Mormons are no more maintstream Christians than the Jehovah's Witnesses, which most mainstream Christians believe is another cult formed almost 2000 years AFTER the life of Christ. I'm not judging (Especially when you consider that I'm somewhat of a lapsed Catholic with a strong interest in Judaism. So to each his own. Right?). I'm just pointing out that Beck is an idiot for assuming that he can tell us what a "real" Christian is, considering that most "real" Christians think that Mormons are no more a religion than the Sopranos were a mob family. They're just a glorified crew, er, cult .

But even if he were Muslim, it shouldn't matter a HOOT and these Republicans should really get off of that or it has the potential to backfire bigtime.
Good point, Apple. You take a jaded Independent, like me. If I'm on the fence right now about 2012, any religion baiting from the Christian Right is sure to drive me right back to the Democratic Party.

I'll second both points(except Apple's assessment that Obama is a "horrible president." He has not lived up to expectations, and he has turned out to be a terrible communicator -- whoda thunk -- he definitely has a shot at being a one termer). Some on the far right have begun a whispering campaign about Mitt Romney being a Mormon. IMHO Romney is a viable preidential candidate who could win in 2010 because he is popular with centrists in both parties. These religious idiots need to look at the constitution they claim to love so much which plainly says there should be no religious test for anyone to hold office.

Re Beck's claim that President Obama is a racist: Only 30 years ago the IRS had to threaten to cancel the Mormon church's non-profit tax exempt status if it didn't end its institutionalized racism; university sports teams were refusing to compete in Utah. In the nick of time, Church elders received a new revelation from God to end their practices of discrimination (God's expeditious timing saved them a shitload of legal bills). As for Beck's claim that the President hates whites? He's the first president with a black father, a white mother, raised by grandparents on his mother's side. It's ridiculous on its face. But maybe we're seeing the fruits of Mormon prophet Brigham Young that the punishment for mixing your blood with the Seed of Cain (blacks) was that the Curse of Cain would come upon you and your future generations . Beck is a race baiting piece of shit. And I'm sure that smart Republicans realize this. But they better smarten up and chase him soon, before he single-handedly costs them any chance of winning the Presidency in 2012.

After the whole Rev. Wright fiasco during which both Obama AND the Reverend threw each other under the bus back in 2008...I don't see how ANYBODY can consider the President a Muslim. He was raised Christian and he's Christian.
But even if he were Muslim, it shouldn't matter a HOOT and these Republicans should really get off of that or it has the potential to backfire bigtime.
The fact that he is an absolutely horrible President is enough to get him out of office in 2 years. He CAN be beaten on the issues, not on his faith.
Which is what I don't understand. IF the opposition feels that strongly about his failures, then why start racist rumors? I honestly DON'T think he's a HORRIBLE president. He has inherited more trouble than any president in history, and I believe that the world had unrealistic expectations. If he's guilty of anything, it's the same thing that plagued Bill Clinton - trying to please everyone. Given that he probably is the recipient of more hate than any president in history, I'm surprised that he doesn't have a thicker skin. And if he wants a 2nd term, he'd better grow one in a hurry. He's got to stand firm and start getting some experts on the economy in his office. People with a job and some money in their pockets are a much happier group. And that's honestly why the first President Bush was voted out of office. We left the prosperous 80s for the sad 1990s and it was out with the old and in with the new. And even THEN it wasn't this bad.

And even THEN it wasn't this bad. I dunno, Babe. I think that's definitely part of it, but I still say that George H.W. Bush would have squeaked out a re-election had it not been for Frank Purdue, er, Ross Perot. That little midget only ran to spite Bush and cost him the election. It worked, too.

A third party is not out of the question in 2012. If the G.O.P nominates a centrist, the real crazies could split and have a tea bag candidate who would siphon off votes in swing states that would otherwise send Obama back to Chicago. Tea bag or douche bag? But you're right, DT. The Republicans have to fear their crazies on the religious right. They're O's best shot at re-election right now. I still say that's whay he's still the favorite in 2012. The wingnuts on the far, far right will scare away moderate Dems (like me). As soon as they mention religion and all that Mom and apple pie crap, that's all she wrote for me.

No surprise here. Ohio has reverted back to the Republicans . Republicans Take the Lead in Ohio's Governor's and Senate RacesBruce Drake, AP Republican candidates have jumped out to double-digit leads in both the Ohio governor's and Senate races, according to a Columbus Dispatch poll conducted Aug. 25 -Sept. 3. In the gubernatorial contest, former Republican Rep. John Kasich leads Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland by 49 percent to 37 percent, with 4 percent preferring some other candidate and 10 percent undecided. For the Senate seat being vacated by the GOP's George Voinovich, former Bush cabinet member and congressman Rob Portman leads Democratic Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher by 50 percent to 37 percent, with 3 percent preferring another choice and 9 percent undecided. The margin of error is 2.2 points. The Dispatch poll found that "the supporters of every statewide GOP candidate (including such posts as attorney general and secretary of state) are two to three times as likely as those who are backing the Democratic candidate to say they are more enthused than usual for this year's election." A sweep of those offices could "return Ohio to the all-Republican rule that the state experienced from 1995 through 2006," the paper said.

Speaking of the Michigan race, I just read a headline today (on some political site, can't remember which) that the Michigan Tea Party candidate (and I don't know the name) is NOT allowed to be on the ballot????? Btw, I've seen Governer Grandholm (sp) several times and I like her. She seems down to earth, smart and really interested in the state of Michigan. TIS

The "real" tea party was convinced that the "Michigan Tea Party" was a front operation by Michigan Democrats designed to split the conservative vote. This MIGHT have had something to do with the fact that the filing papers for some of the "Michigan Tea Party" candidates were filed and notarized by a former political director for the local county Democrats. For the record the State Democratic Party says it has absolutely no connection to any such shennanigans and is just shocked that anyone would think so... I like Granholm too but her time is up. We have term limits. And since she was born in Canada higher political office is not going to happen.

Obama listens to Jimi?? Has President Obama been listening to a lot of Jimi Hendrix lately? With just under two months to go before Election Day, Obama kicked off the fall campaign season Monday with an aggressive speech targeting Republicans. But it was an off-script moment in the speech that's attracted the most attention, as Obama accused his GOP critics of talking about him "like a dog." "Some powerful interests who had been dominating the agenda in Washington for a very long time -- and they're not always happy with me -- they talk about me like a dog. That's not in my prepared remarks, but it's true," Obama said during a speech at Wisconsin's Laborfest on Monday. Though Obama didn't acknowledge it, the line was a verbatim quote from "Stone Free," the first song Hendrix wrote after moving to England in 1966. "They talk about me like a dog," the song says. "Talkin about the clothes I wear. But they don't realize they're the ones who's square."

Make sure you use the calculator at the website below before crying or jumpting for joy. "The Tax Policy Center has come up with a handy calculator that allows you to see how your taxes would be affected based on three possible scenarios: going with Obama’s plan, keeping things the way they are or allowing the tax cuts to expire. The tool allows you to select for age, income level, marriage status and children. For example, a married couple with two young children and an income of about $75,000 would pay $1,653 in federal income tax under current law, $1,008 under Obama's proposal and $4,290 if the tax cuts are allowed to expire." http://lifeinc.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2010/...t-you?gt1=43001

Yes. Obama could learn from "Godfather" Obama could learn from 'Godfather' By: Roger Alan Stone September 21, 2010 04:38 AM EDT
Barack Obama said during the 2008 campaign that his favorite movie was “The Godfather.” But the president apparently views “The Godfather” as a crime or family drama — not as the most important work on the use of power by an Italian since Machiavelli’s “The Prince.”
Lessons from Don Corleone would have helped Obama avoid many of the mistakes in his first year and a half in office.
Remember that the don has done you this favor.
As a powerful man, the don does many people many favors. But they know that something will be expected of them in return. When that moment comes, they had better be willing to return the favor. This favor bank is a great source of the don’s power.
Obama has been all quid, with no pro quo. With Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) down on his luck — no job in the McCain administration and the Democratic Caucus skeptical of his liberal credentials — Obama intervened. Because of that, Lieberman got the committee chairmanship he so desperately wanted. But, somehow, attached to that favor were no strings — for example, no condition that he could vote as he wanted on bills but would support the caucus on breaking filibusters.
Sometimes you need to leave a horse head in the bed.
The don knows that when the situation has reached an impasse, it’s time for the unexpected move that shows you can hurt your opponents in personal ways that they cannot expect, let alone imagine: a calculated overreaction that shows your opponents their actions have consequences.
Take, for example, the blocking of hundreds of administration appointments by Republicans. At one point, Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby announced he was blocking all pending appointments to secure a few million dollars in Defense Department pork for his state.
That would have been the moment to strike: Call up Majority Leader Harry Reid and ask to recess for a day. Then recess-appoint all pending appointments. And give a Rose Garden address saying that our problems are too important for this kind of malarkey.
Of course, for good measure during recess, Obama could have appointed all those who would never have been confirmed by the Senate — and given Shelby a “Sicilian message” by appointing someone from the Southern Poverty Law Center as U.S. attorney for Alabama.
Go to the mattresses.
When a gangland war gets serious, the don has to “go to the mattresses.” That means he assembles all his forces, which stay ready 24 hours a day by sleeping in secret apartments.
Clearly, when the Republicans began filibustering everything, it was time to go to the mattresses — that is, keep the Senate in session continuously and make the Republicans filibuster “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” style. That would have shown the country where the obstruction really lay.
Whenever the possibility of real physical discomfort or even inconvenience has arisen, the Republicans have backed down.
Never tell anyone outside the family what you are thinking.
Note to Rahm Emanuel: This includes “on background” and “high administration official” leaks.
When Michael says that he will save the family by killing Virgil “The Turk” Sollozzo and police Capt. McCluskey, Sonny laughs and says it’s not easy like the Army — “You blow their brains out all over your Ivy League suit.”
In the don’s world, Ivy Leaguers are a rarity, to say the least. Only a few of the men he depends on have been to college. But they do have knowledge useful to the don.
The administration should realize that true diversity of viewpoints does not come from hiring a rainbow coalition of appointees who all attended Harvard. A few people who attended a state college, or who had struggled a bit post-graduation, might have provided valuable insights.
At first glance, the Obama administration appears to be the least educationally diverse administration ever. At least the Bush administration hired people who attended both Harvard and Yale.
The don knows how to return a favor.
When consigliere Tom Hagen asks the movie producer to put Johnny Fontane in the movie, he assures him that the don knows how to return a favor.
After the unions spent $100 million to elect him, the least Obama could have done was push through the Employee Free Choice Act. And since making unions larger adds strength to the Democratic Party, it would have been doing a favor that made the granter even more powerful. The don would appreciate that.
It’s business, not personal.
It doesn’t matter how much fun you and McCain had together at the debates or on the campaign trail or how many times you invite Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) over to watch the Super Bowl. They will fight you tooth and nail on everything — no matter what.
You can regain all that is lost by wiping out your enemies in one massive, lethal attack.
In one day, Michael Corleone is able to completely restore his family’s fortunes by wiping out all their enemies. Everything the family had done that made them look weak and inept had lulled their enemies into complacency, so the family’s surprise and triumph were complete.
Well, Barack, we’re waiting ...

Now this is the Law of the Jungle—as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die. As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

GOP blocks repeal of 'don't ask, don't tell'
The Senate vote, 56-43, falls short of the 60 needed to begin debate on a bill that includes the policy on gays in the military. The measure also holds up the Dream Act, a route to citizenship for those who have attended college or served in the military.
L.A. Times Online
WASHINGTON -- A Republican-led filibuster on Tuesday blocked efforts to repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays in the military, shelving an Obama administration priority at least until after the November election.
The measure repealing the military policy banning gays from serving openly was part of the 2011 Defense authorization bill. Democrats tried to bring up the bill for consideration but failed to get the 60 votes necessary to overcome determined GOP-led opposition. Supporters voted 56-43 in favor of starting debate on the Defense bill, short of the 60 needed.
Democrats control 59 votes in the Senate.
By blocking the bill, Republicans also held up passage of the so-called Dream Act, an immigration measure that was to provide a route to citizenship for youths who were in the country illegally but had attended college or served in the military.
Supporters of repealing the don't ask, don't tell policy vowed to try again.
"This ain't over," Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.), who authored the repeal of the military policy on openly gay service members, said even before the vote. "It's long past time to repeal this policy."
The outcome was all but set earlier Tuesday when Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, a key Republican who supported repealing "don't ask, don't tell" signaled her unease with the limited floor schedule for debate. Collins had been the only Republican to support the repeal in an earlier committee vote. Activists, including musician Lady Gaga, rallied in Collins' home state of Maine on the eve of the vote to encourage Collins and fellow Maine Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe to vote to advance the bill.
No Republicans voted to advance the bill, and two Democrats from Arkansas, Sens. Mark Pryor and Blanche Lincoln, voted against starting debate. Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.), the majority leader, voted "no" in a procedural move so he can bring the bill back to the floor in the future.
Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, the Republican who is waging a write-in campaign after losing her primary election, did not vote.
Republicans complained that Democrats were using the bill as a vehicle to tack on election-year issues that would motivate Democratic voters to go to the polls, even though Republicans had similarly added provisions to past Defense bills.
"Why are we now trying to jam this thing through?" said Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who led the campaign against the provision. "It is all about the battle-effectiveness, the morale, of the men and women who are serving in the military."
But Democrats argued that Republicans were unwilling to allow the debate to open, even when promised a chance to offer an amendment to strike the "don't ask, don't tell" policy from the bill.
The Defense bill includes a 1.4% pay raise for the troops as well as funding for the campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.), the Senate Democratic whip, also vowed to bring the Dream Act back for another vote.
Both political parties have used the authorization bill in years past to advance other legislative goals, so the failure of the military spending plan was seen as unusual. But the process had grown politicized, especially in the limited time remaining before Congress was to adjourn to campaign full time.
The "don't ask, don't tell" law, enacted in 1993, has been targeted by President Obama for repeal, and a federal judge in California this month declared it unconstitutional. Under the proposed legislation, repeal would take effect 60 days after completion of a Pentagon report on steps needed to ensure military readiness. The report is due in December. The House passed the repeal in the spring.
More than 13,500 service members have been discharged under the policy for being openly gay, experts say.
