Is anyone following that story about the 33 miners trapped in a mine in Chile? These poor guys have been trapped for over two months. At first they were saying it would be Dec. before they could rescue them now it looks like it'll be in the next few days. Can you imagine? TIS

Are your areas bombarded with election ads in your areas??? At first I didn't think it was bad at all, but the past week, OMG! Every other commercial is a political ad. It's getting pretty cut throat. LOL A few days ago, Meg Whitman (R) was accused of hiring an illegal as a housekeeper and Brown (D) naturally jumped all over it. Now today I'm hearing the audio tape of a conversation between Brown and an aid in which the aid refers to Whitman as a whore. Politics...what a dirty game. TIS

Is anyone following that story about the 33 miners trapped in a mine in Chile? These poor guys have been trapped for over two months. At first they were saying it would be Dec. before they could rescue them now it looks like it'll be in the next few days. Can you imagine? The latest thing I heard on the news last night was that the rescue shaft still has around 250 feet to go before it reaches the miners. But it was also said that this shaft may have to be reinforced and lined before they can risk bringing anyone out - this would probably add another week to ten days before the shaft is ready. I'm also thinking about the two (?) miners that were supposed to be too overweight to fit in the rescue shaft. I'm not sure what the plan is regarding those men - unless they were (no joke) trying to lose some weight during the time they've been stuck underground. Yep, here in the New York area we're deluged with the same crap. Every time I turn on the TV I see ads for the McMahon/Blumenthal senatorial race in Connecticut highlighting the lie Blumenthal told about serving in the Vietnam War. I actually think Linda McMahon, despite her background in the front office of the WWE, has a real chance of winning this one. Hell, Jesse Ventura got elected governor of Minnesota; California has "The Governator." But the real mudslinging is here in NY with the Cuomo/Paladino gubernatorial campaign. Paladino's mouth is doing a fine job of digging his political grave for him - this is certainly one of the dirtiest campaigns I've seen in these parts in years. And yes...It gets really tiring after only a very short while. The primary elections held last month were particularly annoying: For weeks, every day I would find my mailbox stuffed with flyers from the candidates who were running for minor public offices - but one jerk in particular (I think he was running for Attorney General) kept the junk mail coming on - literally - a daily basis. I finally said to myself that for that reason alone this pest would not get my vote. If I had a birdcage, I would have lined it with his circulars... Still, I never quite escape the feeling that we end up voting for the lesser of two weasels. Candidate at recent Town Hall meetingSignor V.

Just heard tonight that the shaft is now about 130 feet away from the trapped miners.

I have to call in this weekend for jury duty. I don't know how it works for you Mig, but I am to be "available" this week. I'll either call in each day and THEN get dismissed; report to the court and get a case OR report to the court and not get a case. Myself, I find jury duty very interesting, so I don't mind. If I go down there, whether I get a case or not, they can't call me for another year. TIS

Politics...what a dirty game. This year's elections are actually making me apolitical. It's always been a dirty business, but this year it's particularly ugly. On both sides, I might add. For the first time in my life, I can actually see why some people just don't care enough to vote. Not that I'd ever give it up, I'm too much of a political geek, but I can understand the feeling now. These politicians ALL suck.

Myself, I find jury duty very interesting, so I don't mind. If I go down there, whether I get a case or not, they can't call me for another year. One year? Is that how it works in sunny California? In New York, it used to be four years - at least that was what it was when I was called in 2006. I was called just a couple of months ago (got on a personal injury case but it was settled the very day it was supposed to go to trial) and was told it was now every six years. I had never stopped to think that laws regarding jury duty would vary so drastically. Signor V.

He SV, IF you actually drive to the courthouse (whether you get a case or not) you'll be excused for at least a year. IF you just call in each day and don't end up having to go to the courthouse, they can call you sooner than a year. As matter of fact I reported in June of 2009 and received another summons a couple weeks ago. I just called in and turns out I DO have to report on Tuesday (Monday is Columbus Day and courts are closed). I don't have to report until 12:15 p.m. That tells me that (and I'm only guessing) chances are better I won't get a case. It's a short week, courts close on Friday for jury duty, plus since I am reporting in the afternoon and not morning, I think they just need a few more "possibles" for current jury selections. I could be wrong, but that's what I guess Oh, and FWIW, I don't know about your areas, but I requested a courthouse right by my home instead of the larger courthouse which is about 15 miles or so. I e-mailed the courts and the last 3 times they've agreed to let me report there. It's like a 5/10 minute drive. TIS

They are going to be rescuing those 33 miners in Chile any time now. Is anyone following the story? These 33 guys have been trapped in a mine for over 60 days. They have a tube like thing they will put them in and lift them out one at a time. They say it'll take about 15 minutes for each guy. I'm watching on MSNBC but assume other channels may be broadcasting it as well. It's amazing!!! TIS

I can only imagine the excitement there at the site. They are all so lucky to have survived. What a happy event. If I am not mistaken, I thought they said the distance down is equivalent to 2Xs the Empire State bldg? Anyone else hear that? And, the tube they are using is very small. They said if anyone was claustrophobic, they'd have to simply deal with it, because there's just enough room for a body. That's scary. TIS

It's NOT QUITE twice the distance. I understand they are about 2,050 feet down.... the Empire State Bldg (without the antenna) is 1,250 feet tall.

Hey, math isn't my strength. Yet you can formulate the shortest distance to the front of a buffet line within inches in a matter of seconds. Amazing!
