My cousins in Italy don't understand the hyphen either, Mumrekin. They're happy to tell me that I'm an American tongue grin.

I guess it's because America is a nation of immigrants, and we don't want to lose our ethnicity altogether when we come here. Hence, the hyphen (Italian-Americans, African-Americans, Irish-Americans, etc.).
