thats why i like those American terms. African-American, Italian American etc. Must be part of the American dream:D

I guess it's because America is a nation of immigrants, and we don't want to lose our ethnicity altogether when we come here. Hence, the hyphen (Italian-Americans, African-Americans, Irish-Americans, etc.).
