Just like Boston to miss out on a free agent due to their lack of spending. First A-Rod, then Tex and now Gonzalez

Red Sox's deal for Gonzalez fizzles

The Red Sox were unable to complete a deal for Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, SI.com has learned.

The Padres and Red Sox had previously reached an agreement on a trade that would have sent the All-Star to Boston for four minor league prospects. The Red Sox had a deadline until 2.p.m. ET today to sign Gonzlaez to a contract extension.

Gonzalez, who has one year to go on his contract with San Diego for about $6 million, is seeking a contract similiar to the one Mark Teixeira received with the Yankees after the 2008 season, $180 million over eight years. Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard, another comparable player, recently signed a five-year, $125 million contract.

The Red Sox and Padres had been discussing Gonzalez for more than a year. The Padres' front office is very familiar with Boston's prospects, as GM Jed Hoyer, assistant GM Jason McLeod and new top executive Josh Byrnes all once worked for Boston.

Gonzalez, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2000 draft, has spent the past five years in San Diego, his hometown, and in the past four seasons has had at least 30 home runs and 99 RBIs.

I don't think they'd be able to afford him. He didn't go to Boston because they didn't pony up the money. I don't see Chicago doing it either.

Also, I can't believe Jayson Werth signed with the Nationals for 7-years and $126 million eek

Your hate clouds your ability to see the future. But it's nice to see you recognize that the Yankees spend (like nobody else) to buy their players.

Ooops.

Players aren't free, of course you have to woo them with money. The Yankees get the job done for who they want. They don't try to pinch pennies and then cry later on that Uncle George and the rest of the 'Evil Empire' are ruining baseball.

The deal went through but Gonzalez still hasn't signed a contract extension and I say good for him. He'll get more on the free agent market, rather than settling for Boston's offer.

Of course they don't cry later on. One doesn't cry when you are the worst (by far) offender of ruining baseball.

I'm confused, I heard all day that Gonzalez had been traded to the Red Sox. Did it finally go through? If he does in fact go to the Sox, you will LOVE him SC. I've seen him a lot in the NL West, and I'm glad he's gone. (assuming he has actually been traded). But I also love his play. One of the games most beautiful swings, with power to all fields and great defense too, especially for a bigger guy at first base.

The deal went though, although there's no contract extension (that's why the deal feel apart originally). So technically he's still a free agent after the 2011 season.

Can anyone explain to me the logic of paying $10 million a season to a .198 hitter?

Carlos Pena, who signed a 1 year/$10 million deal with the Cubs.

Of course what was I saying? This is chicken feed compared to Jayson Werth and Carl Crawford combined making $268 million over 14 years.

Crawford I might understand, overpaid but I get it. But Werth? He gets big money for what, one All-Star appearance?

WHICH REMINDS ME... How did the Yanks let Crawford slip thru the fingers?

They were too busy embarrassing Derek Jeter.

Ain't that the truth?? At least Jeter, who is usually discreet to a fault, went public with his criticism of the whole process.

Well Yanks will have to sign Cliff Lee or else risk losing next season before it even begins.

All I know is that the Crawford/Weryth signings just made any deal for Lee much much much sweeter.

I think the Yankees are beginning a slide. Aging stars will have their bright moments, but there are too many weak spots. Catcher for one. Pitching for two. The intangible-unknown is the health of an aging team. Injury free the Yankees can compete, but Posada, Petite, Jeter, A-Rod and Riverva are becoming liabilities. Any year they can all end up on the DL.

FWIW - I've already stated my distaste of the Red Sox and their high spending ways.... several times over the past few years.

LoL, nope, just pointing out that they're in the same boat as the Yankees. No matter how many Red Sox fans like to point the dirty end of the stick at the Yankees and say, "they're the problem!"

Many MLB teams open up their wallets, including apparently now the Nationals too.

But the Yanks open up the most.

That said, will Irishman agree with me that the BoSox at least overspent on Crawford?

i wish the cubs can open their wallets to the right person, and not to the wrong person i.e. sorional, fukudome, bradley, zambrano, and maybe pena

The Yanks can spend because they have the money and the league allows it. They have a lucrative market with the YES network and as long as the league/owners/union allow it......hey life is tough in the real world. It still doesn't mean you have a winner. You still have to play the games and win the games.

Besides, Yanks had the biggest payroll in the 2000s and they won what...only 2 titles, and even then only at the beginning and end of the decade?

"Only" two titles. How many low budget teams even have a chance to win one? Having the biggest payroll doesn't guarantee anything, but it certainly helps and takes away from low budget teams. The way baseball is run is a joke without any kind of player and team salary cap.

I think to make it fair there should be a cap on tems and players. This would make for a better variety of teams. However I am a big Yankees fan, and I am glad they signed Jeter again.

It is better to beg for forgivness than ask for permission.
