The Genovese are certainly the most powerful Mafia Family in both New York and the U.S. And I think one could make the argument that, in a number of ways, the Mafia is still the strongest organized crime group in the Tri-State area.
Unlike Philadelphia, there are still things that differentiate the Genovese Family from other OC groups. The Genovese are considered to be the most diversified "business crime group" in the nation. They are said to control the largest bookmaking and loansharking operations in the New York/New Jersey area. They are involved in drug trafficking though not as deeply as other New York Families. Over the past 15 years or so they were among the fastest to form alliances with other OC groups and move into newer rackets like stock fraud.
But what really has set them apart is their ability to maintain varying degrees of influence over labor unions and in legitimate industries despite repeated attacks from law enforcement, industry regulation, union reform, etc. That's really what set the Mafia apart in the past from other OC groups. And the Genovese Family has been the most successful in holding onto that as much as possible. Though to a smaller degree than the past, they are still are involved in the waterfront, construction, trucking, and waste hauling industries and have been involved in several cases over the past decade with the ILA, Teamsters, Laborers, and other unions. So they are actually the only original mafia family left in the U.S. who remain intriguing as the rest are shades of their former selves. Based on you're information, I would say that the Philadephia family is now the new Mickey Mouse mafia.

So they are actually the only original mafia family left in the U.S. who remain intriguing as the rest are shades of their former selves. The Gambinos are a strong #2 behind the Genovese. People have long underestimated them because of the hits they took during and after Gotti. The Luccheses, Colombos, and Bonannos are certainly not what the Genovese and Gambinos are, but they are considerably more "big time" than Families outside New York. It's also a different dynamic there because you've got five Families, as opposed to only one like elsewhere, and they often work together in joint operations. There is certainly a noticeable drop off when looking at the remaining Families elsewhere in the country. Based on you're information, I would say that the Philadephia family is now the new Mickey Mouse mafia. Author George Anastasia has called the Philadelphia Family the "Simpsons" of the American mob, due to their disfunction. The LA mob was referred to as the "Mickey Mouse Mafia" back in the day because they were always small potatoes compared to larger and more powerful Families in the northeast and midwest.

What happened to the Kansas City LCN link? I clicked on it and the download is unavailable.
Wait...got it. Didn't know you were editing off the original post. Again, great job. When can we expect Buffalo? Just wondering.

Great work with the charts Mukremin!
I know Geograpically there wasn't really any boundary lines as such for the New York five families but i'm sure they had greater influences in the many different areas. I was wondering if there was such a map to show where each of the different families had the most ongoing activity. Either that or maybe one of the entire USA showing how far and wide the many different Mobs from New York, Chicago etc were actually active and showing where they had operations underway?

As I have stated before- Great work and Thanks! It is really cool to visualize the information in a chart. On the Commission chart, does anyone know who represented Detroit ( I beleive at one time Joe Uno had a seat at the Table), St. Louis and Kansas City were probably represented by ChiTown. Just a guess. Thanks again Mukremin, please keep them coming.
