Just like Boston to miss out on a free agent due to their lack of spending. First A-Rod, then Tex and now Gonzalez Red Sox's deal for Gonzalez fizzlesThe Red Sox were unable to complete a deal for Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, SI.com has learned. The Padres and Red Sox had previously reached an agreement on a trade that would have sent the All-Star to Boston for four minor league prospects. The Red Sox had a deadline until 2.p.m. ET today to sign Gonzlaez to a contract extension. Gonzalez, who has one year to go on his contract with San Diego for about $6 million, is seeking a contract similiar to the one Mark Teixeira received with the Yankees after the 2008 season, $180 million over eight years. Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard, another comparable player, recently signed a five-year, $125 million contract. The Red Sox and Padres had been discussing Gonzalez for more than a year. The Padres' front office is very familiar with Boston's prospects, as GM Jed Hoyer, assistant GM Jason McLeod and new top executive Josh Byrnes all once worked for Boston. Gonzalez, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2000 draft, has spent the past five years in San Diego, his hometown, and in the past four seasons has had at least 30 home runs and 99 RBIs. Source: SI.com

The Yankees get the job done for who they want. They don't try to pinch pennies and then cry later on that Uncle George and the rest of the 'Evil Empire' are ruining baseball. Of course they don't cry later on. One doesn't cry when you are the worst (by far) offender of ruining baseball.

Ron Santo...Rest in Peace. He had been sick for a long time so it is not a surprise that he died. But still, only 70 years old..... He was a damned good 3rd baseman, certainly one of the best of my lifetime. R.I.P. Ron He should be in the HOF.

WHICH REMINDS ME... How did the Yanks let Crawford slip thru the fingers? They were too busy embarrassing Derek Jeter.

LoL, nope, just pointing out that they're in the same boat as the Yankees. No matter how many Red Sox fans like to point the dirty end of the stick at the Yankees and say, "they're the problem!" Many MLB teams open up their wallets, including apparently now the Nationals too. But the Yanks open up the most. That said, will Irishman agree with me that the BoSox at least overspent on Crawford?

Besides, Yanks had the biggest payroll in the 2000s and they won what...only 2 titles, and even then only at the beginning and end of the decade? "Only" two titles. How many low budget teams even have a chance to win one? Having the biggest payroll doesn't guarantee anything, but it certainly helps and takes away from low budget teams. The way baseball is run is a joke without any kind of player and team salary cap.

I think to make it fair there should be a cap on tems and players. This would make for a better variety of teams. However I am a big Yankees fan, and I am glad they signed Jeter again.
It is better to beg for forgivness than ask for permission.
