I have heard there was a certain amount of animosity between these guys. Am I wrong? If so why was there? Also, what was (is) the general feeling of the Chicago LCN towards the Five Families and vice versa? It seems that the Chicago guys regarded the NY guys as "animals", and thought of themselves as "gentlemen". Any thoughts?

Welcome. I've read that both groups regarded the other as occasionally over the top in some fashion or another. The Outfit seemed to be more willing to use torture. Also in the Midwest car bombs were more common (though this was not all The Outfit)

I'm not familiar with any personal animosity between Accardo and Bonanno outside of the Chicago Outfit's wariness about Bonnano's attempted expansion into Arizona and other places which the Outfit already had a foothold.

Now this is the Law of the Jungle—as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die.

And Chicago Outfit targeted policemen and other government employees. The New York familie stayed out of that.

In 1999, A&E had an excellent biography of Bonanno. The enormous wedding of his son, Bill, and Rosalie Profaci was discussed. About 3,000 people attended the reception at the Hotel Astor. The program specifically mentioned Accardo as one of the bosses who were there.

Incidentally, the biography also provided further ammunition for the many who are (justifiably) enormously skeptical of Joe Bonanno's claim to be against drugs. It was mentioned that soon after Bill and Rosalie's wedding, Joe paid a visit to Sicily. According to the later testimony of a Sicilian mafioso, one of the reasons for the visit was to arrange narcotics shipments.

I have read William Roemers book on Accardo "The Genuine Godfather" but its been a while. I recall in there something saying Accardo didn't like Bonanno- and yeah it had something to do with the Arizona conflict of interests. Plus, didn't Joe Bonanno write a book and do TV interviews about his lifestyle? That was totally against Accardo's style-to be very low key. He probably had a personal dislike for all that.

That's exactly what his trip to Sicily was for. One of Bonanno's top guys - Carmine Galante - was huge in the drug trade. As was his family in general. Bonanno against drugs? Yeah, right.

Post 1950 or so Bonanno had started to expand his group's influence far beyond the Northeast-especially into Arizona. Arizona was considered open territory and the Outfit had already gotten involved in some real estate, vending machines, political corruption and jukeboxes.

So the story I read said that Giancana was rather peeved about this and told Accardo that "That c********is planting flags all over the world!!!". Bonanno was also supposedly seeking investments in Haiti, making moves in Cuba and Canada and of course had the narcotics interests from Sicily.

This can be taken with a HUGE grain of salt but in the book "Double Cross" by Sam and Chuck Giancana, Mooney is supposedly quoted speaking of Bonanno "He's afraid of his f***** shadow and he's definitely afraid of me. I've got no respect for the guy at all. He's got no guts; whenever there's trouble, he runs out of town."

Of course personal distastes aside as the book "The Outfit" pointed out, business was still business. In Thanksgiving 1958, Joe Profaci, Joe Bonanno, Joe Magliocco and "Joe" Accardo all met at a Detroit Family owned Phoenix ranch.

Less than a week later Gus Greenbaum and his wife were murdered. It may be that this was agreed to by these men and Meyer Lansky.
