Did they really need to remake "Arthur"?

I like Russell Brand and all, but this looks retarded. And why Helen Mirren in the Gielgud role?

The original, while hardly an all-time great film, was a lot of fun. Why mess with that?

I saw previews of the new "Arthur". I didn't even know what it was til they showed the title. I don't know who the lead actor is but to me, there is only one Arthur. smile

I haven't seen the remake, but c'mon, there's only ONE Arthur, and he's probably rolling in his grave. ohwell

Hollywood needs to think of something NEW rather than rehash (destroy) old classics!

They are really making another Planet of the Apes???? I loved the original and know there was a remake not to long ago. Plus wasn't there even an attempt at a tv series? I am just surprised they are giving it another shot. confused

It's titled "Rise From The Planet Of The Apes." This is the first I've heard of it. Anyway, here's the story and a short clip from the original with Charlton Heston. smile

I think it's reality. If so, that could mean that some of the wives may disappear as the series progresses.

'Mob Wives' show far from the Mafia reality By George Anastasia, Inquirer Staff Writer

The VH1 reality show, which will debut at 8 p.m. next Sunday, features the wives and daughters of wiseguys, including Karen Gravano, whose father, Salvatore "Sammy the Bull" Gravano, is one of the most infamous turncoats in underworld history.

Ten episodes of the series, set in Staten Island, N.Y., are scheduled, and if the first is any indication, we're in for lots of shouting, cursing, and drama.

PB,

I absolutely loved that show. Louie DePalma was such an absolute asshole wasn't he? Yet we loved him. Every time he'd make an announcement to the cabbies he'd grab the mic and say "listen up losers." lol

The entire cast was great (poor Bobby in real life is certainly in horrible shape last I saw). However, my absolute favorite was always Reverend Jim. Sometimes he didn't even have to say anything and he'd crack me up. One of the funniest episodes ever (and I'm sure you know) is Jim taking the driving test at the DMV. When I first saw it I was in tears I was laughing so hard. It's still hilarious. lol

I remember when it originally aired, Tis. I laughed so hard that first time I almost choked. It still makes me pee a little when I watch it whistle. Watch Tony Danza in the background laughing. That's not acting! lol

That one episode was hilarious. But I also remember the one where Elaine caught Louie spying on her while she was in the bathroom and she got a NOW lawyer to take him to court. And when he was asked what punishment he thought he should get he said "May I suggest a spanking." That is one of my favorite lines of all time.

Oli,

I do remember that one. Hilarious. There was one too when Louie's mother appeared. If I remember correctly, she and Louie were walking out of the apartment. She was leaving from her visit or something and was carrying a suitcase. Louie says, (Paraphrasing) "Ma, you shouldn't be carrying that suitcase with your bad arm." And he took the suitcase and put it in her other hand. LOL lol

Yeah, Louie went to get her out of the home. She moved out because Louie called her a name. When Louie asked what he called her, she replied with about a dozen Italian pejoratives.

Louie's reply: "It slipped." lol lol lol lol

"Taxi" only ran 5 years, believe it or not. And the reruns are hard to come by today. Luckily I bought the whole series on dvd. You can get all 5 seasons now for less than a hundred bucks. Compared to the crap that's on tv nowadays, that's a steal.

You're forgetting the best part of that epidode, Oli. Towards the end, Louie confides in Elaine how much it hurts him to have to buy his clothes in the kids' department. She feels sorry for him and forgives him so he can get his job back. She goes to give him a hug, and the final shot is of Louie grabbing her ass lol. You can see Marilu Henner crack up. That wasn't acting, either lol.

NEW ORLEANS ā€” Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage has been arrested in New Orleans after a drunken argument with his wife outside a residence in the French Quarter, police said on Saturday.

The 47-year-old film star was taken into custody at about 11:30 p.m. on Friday and booked on suspicion of domestic abuse battery, disturbing the peace and public drunkenness, New Orleans Police spokesman Garry Flot said in a written statement.

Anyone hear anything about "Atlas Shrugged Part 1"? I've read reviews that praised it and others that ripped it a new one.

I can not honestly recommend the series yet as I am only about 1/2 done with the book on which the first season is based. However tonight HBO starts the long awaited "Game of Thrones" miniseries. It's based on the book by George RR Martin.

Martin is an incredibly long winded and dense writer (think Dickens or Dumas) who has a rather annoying penchant for introducing new characters every 3-4 pages. But he is a great storyteller and I think that this series, if done correctly , could be a win for HBO.

It's "fantasy" but the real meat of the story is in quite mundane and realistic bitter and murderous rivalries between noble families for power over each other and ultimately the royal throne. It's not a simplistic tale of good and evil since even the "good" people tend to be somewhat self-interested and just about anyone will try to have you knocked off if they think it's in their family's interest.

This could be described as Tolkien for adults. One "good" father insists his young son witness a public execution so that he toughens up and understands what justice means. A "bad" father, disgusted with his first born son's lack of martial desires and general sloth quietly threatens his eldest with a promise of slow dismemberment unless he gives up his succession claim in favor of his younger but more traditionally masculine brother.

I would not have made the comparison but one NYT writer drew a parallel between this story and The Sopranos. YMMV. I hope to finish the first book sometime this week and perhaps will do a review.

HBO 14 min preview video

As it turns out, adapting George R. R. Martinā€™s epic ā€œSong of Ice and Fireā€ fiction series for premium cable amounts to such good, simple sense that itā€™s stunning that there arenā€™t more fantasy series on TV. Considering the falling cost of C.G.I. effects and the rising popularity of the (loosely defined) fantasy genre ā€” like ā€œHeroesā€ on NBC, ā€œLostā€ on ABC and the hit ā€œBattlestar Galacticaā€ on Syfy ā€” itā€™s remarkable that networks still seem content to mostly loop the same Mobius strip of programming: detectives puzzling, lawyers pacing, sitcom dads making sitcom children roll their eyes.

Meanwhile, cable TV continues its romance with ancient history. But it doesnā€™t take more than a glance at the melodramatic ā€œThe Tudorsā€ (soft porn trussed up in intricate period costume) or ā€œThe Borgiasā€ (soft porn trussed up in papal robes), both on Showtime, or HBOā€™s forgettable ā€œRomeā€ (predictable betrayals spiced up with toga parties) or Starzā€™s man-meat festival ā€œSpartacusā€ (proving vengeance is a dish best served with rock-hard glutes) to recognize the limits of this love affair ā€” whether itā€™s a not-exactly-historically-accurate, lean and hungry King Henry VIII or an ancient Roman who proclaims, ā€œGood stuff!ā€ after puffing on some imperial bud. By contrast, fantasy writers are free to roam, fueled by imagination and heedless of the stringent requirements of history. Armed with menacing zombies, dagger-wielding assassins and merciless warriors on horseback, the fantasy writer can do a singular kind of justice to the raw bewilderment and barbarism of our own times.

This is why, with ā€œGame of Thrones,ā€ HBO may have at last found a natural heir to ā€œThe Sopranos.ā€ If ā€œThe Sopranosā€ was a timely parable about the crumbling state of the American family, ā€œGame of Thronesā€ is a timely fable of sweeping global destruction and doom. ā€œWinter is coming,ā€ the rather sulky denizens of the imaginary land of Westeros repeat to each other, and these words eerily echo the gathering gloom of our contemporary predicament, from the global financial crisis to nuclear meltdown to widespread revolution....

HBO's Game of Thrones debut gets decent ratings and is renewed for second season.

TV Article
"There were fears spread around the Internet that the premiere of Game of Thrones fizzled a bit, and some sites forecasted doom--DOOM!--on projected low figures. But those fears were put to rest when HBO released its ratings figures: "The gross audience for the premiere night of GAME OF THRONES on the main HBO channel was 4.2 million viewers." That includes encores on HBO's main channel, but from the wording, it doesn't include HBO's massive Monday night encore in which the premiere was shown simultaneously on every HBO feed. Given word of mouth, the 4.2 million is really just a jumping off point. Who watches TV live nowadays anyway?"

So glad to have my "Glee" back, even though it was only a mediocre episode. However, Amber/Mercedes' performance ws phenomenal. Loved the sudden backup gospel choir, too!

Also, one of the best "Parenthood" episodes EVER. I was moved to tears.

Watched THE FIGHTER starring Mark Wahlburg and Christian Bale. Excellent film. Bale definitely deserved his Oscar.
