Hey guys. I am new here but have read/watched a decent amount about the mafia but....

After seeing the poll if Joe Ligambi will get arrested this year and hearing he did I researched him and read (I don't know how accurate Wikipedia is I guess but) that he was made at the age of 47.

And when I see the lists of the guys that are made in the different families most of them are 40++.

So my question is...

What is the average age a guy gets made?

And how are some of the guys that got made really young and how young were they?

I wanted to do some work on the Ligambi article, but all Blood and Honor does is say that Scarfo didn't initiate him when he did Phil Narducci and Nicky Milano. I also gave my mother my copy of The Last Gangster so I can't check there for a date.

In Italy there seems to be trend towards much younger recruits. Google names like Gianni Nicchi & Giovanni Strangio to learn about some younger guys that played a failry large role in their respective organizations, especially Nicchi, who in his early twenties was selected to represent the Palermo clans in New York in meetings which led to the indictments unveiled in Operation Old Bridge in 08.

Ligambi was definitely made later in his life, having proved himself by serving part of a life sentance for the Frankie Flowers hit before having his conviction overturned.

Here's the average member age of the five New York families - taken from a sample provided by the family lists over on the Real Deal forum.

Genovese Family - 72 years

Gambino Family - 68 years

Colombo Family - 65 years

Lucchese Family - 64 years

Bonanno Family - 61 years



Obviously there are members both older and younger but the general range seems to be early 60's to early 70's. Probably quite a few younger ones (relatively speaking by mob standards) that haven't been identified yet.


As far as the average age a guy gets made? To be made in your 20's or even 30's is usually considered very young. I'd say it happens more often in a guy's 40's or 50's.

Salvie was young...like 24 or 25 when he was made by his dad Phil Testa. Phil testa and Scarfo did make some rather young guys along the way. But Uncle Joe wasn't made until he was in his 40s by Scarfo. But he was made after the murder of Frankie Flowers. He was just a bartender early in his life I believe...I don't think he was arrested for the first time until he ws in 30's for smuggling cigs. Who the hell knows what the real average age is that a guy gets made. I don't think there is a Mafia Census report every ten years asking questions like that. Ha : )

Why dont you hear of young ones getting made at the age of like 20-25? Is it because of the fact they are new to the organised crime field and they dont have as much experience as the the middle aged?

Thta's pretty much it. There have been a few well-connected guys here and there that were made in their 20's but it's very rare. Despite the general decline in the quality of mob recruits over the years, they typically don't give out buttons to just any punk kid who wants one. It's about experience. But it's also about showing over an extended period of time that you can stand up to the heat when indictments come down.

Anyone have any idea how old Gotti Jnr was when he got made? Wasn't he a captain by about 30? Also aren't some associates today turning down getting made because they know the heat increases when ur fully inducted. Heard some FBI agent talking about that recently.
