I heard Marlon Brando studied Frank Costello's voice to use in the film. Also, wasn't Costello against the drug trade? Maybe that was connected to Vito being against drugs as well...

Costello's arch-enemy, Vito Genovese, who engineered Costello's retirement with a botched hit, was strongly behind drugs. Some accounts have it that the abortive 1957 Apalachin meeting was called, in part, by Genovese to bless drug-trafficking.
