Hi, I've just joined the forum.

My name is David Critchley, the author of the book "The Origins of Organized Crime in America: The New York City Mafia, 1981-1931"

The chart has two errors I can see. "Gaetano" Gagliano was Tommaso Gagliano (real name) and Luciano was simply one of the first Commission members but he wasn't "more" than that, above the others in some way.

Hello David, welcome to the forums smile enjoy your stay.

Thanks for the feedback, i see what you mean. His full name was:
Tomasso "Tommy Gaetano" Gagliano

The reason for Luciano to stand above them is not necessary a show of power/strength. But i will fix the other issue, any other things you would like to see? Have you saw todas charts? smile

Mukremin, you are a hell of a chartmaker!
I am a memberchart freak myself, but don´t know how to convert them to PDF files and to add pictures and stuff.
Is there any interest from your side, to produce charts of the NY Families from the early 80s?
We could collaborate. I could send you names.
The charts would exist of only bosses, underbosses, consiglieres and captains. Seems easier. We could name some important soldiers in there.
Does this sound interesting? Please let me know.

Yeah. That´s what I thought too. It would be nice to see those charts up here. That is if Mukremin is interested of course.

Thats a good idea, we can work together on those charts. What about a chart for all the New York families during the Commission case? So were talking about 1985-86 and further.

Like you said we will only focus on the top hierarchy, and perhaps important up and coming soldiers.

His nickname was "Tommy" but the Gaetano bit wasn't used to my knowledge. I think this Gaetano angle came from faulty research later on. So it was Tommaso "Tommy" Gagliano.

There is a genuine photo of him in my book that you can use. If you do, would you mind giving me a credit line (tell them where it came from)?

I think around that time there could of been 300-400 guys in the Gambino's, I read it perhaps in the five families book.

Yes i was thinking about the size at that time, but i am not sure if they ever had around 400 members.

Capeci says that they had around 250-300 at max, even during Carlo Gambino and Castellano.

I think 250-300 members at that time is the correct figure.
FBI documents seems to confirm this.
However, the number was larger back in the 50s and 60s with maybe 450 members!

Did you know that (week as the Bonannos are today), they had close to 400 members in the 50s/60s?!

I would take family membership estimates before the 1980's with a big grain of salt, since the feds really weren't keeping that close of tabs. Even the figures from journalists like Capeci or Raab don't completely agree. The families were certainly bigger at their peak in the 1950's and 1960's. But some of those numbers came from Joe Bonanno's estimates and whatnot.

400 seems a bit to much, even in the 50-60s. How in earth would they know who was made? That would mean every single of them would have to get through the ritual etc, i dont think in those times the government would know the exact difference between made men and associate.

Heres the updated chart, made some slight changes:

I think Bill Bonanno mentioned 375 to 11 (or someting like that) in his favor, after being elected to consigliere in 1963.

Hmm i remember something like that, but even that is huge. Lucky for them that they have 1/3 left of their manpower.

Oke.. whats next? I plan to start on a 1985 Genovese chart, and i also want to make a commission chart of 1985 just before the Commission Case.

The Commission case was already happening in 1985. I believe it started in 1984 and ended in 1986.

Anyway, one you should never believe Bill Bonanno. This guy is full of shit.

Joe Bonanno stated his family had 300 made members. It could be that the Bonannos had that many just after the Castellammarese war. From the 1960s to early 2000s they had about 150 made men.

You cannot compare the American Cosa Nostra with those organizations, i am just saying the government could not know exactly how many made members there were. They could have added associates to those numbers, 250-300 is a much more real number. Today that number is around 200.

American Cosa Nostra has strict rules on membership, i dont know if thats the same with those other organizations. Thats why you cannot compare it, American Cosa Nostra is unique in every aspect and thats why they were so succesful.
