He was not. Paul Ricca ran the Outfit during that time period, with Accardo & in place as underbosses. This proved to be unsuccessful & it was decided that Giancana would take the reigns. After Giancana, Joey 'O'Brien' Aiuppa abruptly took hold of the Outfit, placing Jackie Cerone & Joe B. as consigliere & underboss, respectfully. So no, Joe Batters was never the boss of the outfit, always used as a smokescreen & a mediator, and that's the way Ricca/Aiuppa wanted it, they were the most long-term successful Outfit bosses because no one knew their names, and they stayed out of court (until the whole Vegas thing when Aiuppa & Cerone went down). Tony Accardo didn't mind going down in history as a "top boss", even though anyone with any real Outfit knowledge will laugh at the notion.
I'm new to this website, the general crowd seems to be folks with mainly knowledge of the East Coast factions. I've read a bunch of false Outfit trivia during the short time that I've been a member. Accardo was the boss and to say he was never boss is ludicrous, and as far as Giancana being bulletproof - I gotta laugh at that - he was shot seven fucking times, I do consider myself to have some "real" outfit knowledge and I think you got a little mixed up buddy ... where do you get your information from?
From now on, nothing goes down unless I'm involved. No blackjack no dope deals, no nothing. A nickel bag gets sold in the park, I want in. You guys got fat while everybody starved on the street. Now it's my turn. -Frank White
You say your 72, if they come back and tell me to give you a message - and if you want to defy it ... I assure you that you will never reach 73 - Joey "the clown" Lombardo

Right. Giancana held the top spot for only 8 years, just before being chased out of Chicago by his peers. Does that make him the all time greatest gangster? Then what about Joe Profaci who ruled for 35 years? Or Magaddino for over 40 years? Or Bonanno for close to 40 years etc...?

I don´t get your posts, BridgeportVet.
Accardo WAS the outfit boss in the 1940s and 1950s
In early 1960's, there is an FBI audio recording of high ranking Genovese saying that Ricca still had to approve decisions. This is while Giancana was acting boss. I'm not sure if this was the case when Accardo was boss though.

I understand that the Outfit is the most secretive syndicate & very little about what really goes on within their realm, but a select few of us are in the know. So I guess that makes you a rat, right? In one breath you say how secretive Chicago is, in the next you make a boastful post like this one. You can't have it both ways. If you really are "in the know," then you're a R-A-T.

Where do you goons get your Outfit info from?
I'm glad you're not rude and inconsiderate. Some would argue that from mid 1940's up to about 1957, Accardo was defacto boss and Ricca was in a consigliere role. Accardo was respected as the go to person in that period by NY bosses, but there is evidence that the same was not always true for Giancana.

So how has DiFronzo been so secure in power since '93?

Johnny Bananas DiFronzo is one of the most fascinating, polarizing Outfit bosses of all-time, hands down. He runs a very streamlined, zipped-up Outfit. He is of the Aiuppa/Cerone/Accardo school of Outfit bosses, meaning he is very shrewd & succinct. Everything is secured & backed-up ten fold. There are many rumours about JDF being a dry snitch, and those rumours probably have some truth to them, but it really doesn't matter at this point, no one is touching DiFronzo's Elmwood Park crew. He is also protected by the legendary Marco 'The Mover' D'Amico (consigliere at the moment) & his brother Pete DiFronzo, who is the current Outfit underboss. These are both two very wealthy & ruthless individuals (especially Marco) who's personal crews are some of the most infamous in modern Outfit history.
Getting rid of the Marcellos & the Calabreses was a big relief for DiFronzo, as those crews were pretty much the last of the savage street monsters. DiFronzo shuns any type of reckless street action. Needless to say, he is not particularly well-liked by Outfit guys outside of Elmwood/Melrose Park. Like I said, Johnny Bananas is an Aiuppa type boss in the sense that there are absolutely no hand-outs & you eat what you kill. Regardless of personal opinion on the man, he is an undisputed juggernaut in the world of organized crime & has always managed to stay under the radar (save for Operation Gambat)

BridgeportVet, maybe you should show us some proper sources before anyone would even consider believing you... C'mon, Sonny, he's from Chicago. He doesn't need to provide any sources. HE IS THE SOURCE!

Anthony Accardo was NEVER the boss of the Chicago Outfit. Anyone with real knowledge on them knows this, it's just common knowledge. Hey ya Oldman u look like uncle junior u should lick paula deens asshole Where do you goons get your Outfit info from? lol only folks that watch YouTube & Outfit documentaries believe the incredibly effective deception that Accardo was ever boss. He was consigliere & front boss all his life, and he was content with that position.
Seriously, this is supposed to be a forum about real life LCN knowledge & I have only seen folks with Hollywood knowledge. Ask me anything you like, I understand that the Outfit is the most secretive syndicate & very little about what really goes on within their realm, but a select few of us are in the know. I thought I would be generous by coming here to share/trade some information on the Chicago Outfit, but so far I've only gotten nasty, juvenile feedback.
Outfit Bosses from 1931-on: 1931-1943: Ricca/Nitti 1943-1957: Ricca/Accardo 1957-1966: Moe Giancana/Ricca/Accardo 1966-1967: Sam Battaglia 1967-1969: Jackie The Lackey Cerone 1969-1971: Milwaukee Phil Alderisio 1971-1986: Joey Aiuppa/Jack Cerone/Tony Accardo (IN THAT ORDER) 1986-1989: Joe Ferriola 1989-1993: Black Sam Carlisi 1993-present: Johnny 'Bananas' DiFronzo
So as you can see, Accardo was never full-on boss. Kudos to the Outfit for continuing to confuse people on the matter to this very day.
