It's not true at all. From 2002 through 2009, the Congress approved over $20 trillion in federal expenditures. Through the two fiscal years for which President Obama has prepared federal budgets, the Congress has approved about $7 trillion.

I heard this morning on the local news that in San Francisco it's in the $4.00ish. California has emission taxes or something that adds a bit more to our gas too. frown

California's excise tax on gasoline is 18 cents per gallon. Other taxes include a 6% state sales tax and 1.25% county tax, plus additional local sales taxes of 1.2 cents per gallon state UST fee.

I think it's to say Obama has proposed more spending over the next four years than the rest of the presidents ever combined.

Well, even I would never presume to put words in Rove's mouth. However, since Reagan's first budget in 1982 through Bush's last budget for FY 2009, the federal government spent over $45 trillion. Do the math.

I'm not putting words in anyone's mouth. The Obama administration "raised discretionary spending by 24 percent from President George W. Bush's last full-year budget and will run up more debt by October than Bush did in eight years." Karl Rove on Sunday, January 10th, 2010 in the Washington Post

Needless to say you start adding in Obamacare and the by time the REAL price tag emerges from all of the various entitlement programs it will be too late to do much more than raise taxes.

Not to use the Sarah Palin 'knowledge by association' logic, but being from Texas it's almost impossible not to know a little about this topic. 3 million of the 4 million natural gas oil wells ever drilled in the history of the world were done in the Oklahoma-Texas region, and natural gas is one way to ween ourselves off Middle Eastern oil, because we can get to more of it than anyone else. We can still get it out of the salt water aquifers and if you drill right you can get through the water but the problem is the dirty water that comes out when the sand helps seperates the shale, but new technology is allowing us to use that same excess water by moving it to the next well. You still have to dispose of the water but you can use it for 8 or 9 wells before doing so. This technology has to be expanded, though.

44 stated clearly in the last state of the union that he's anti-oil, anti-fossil, and pro-green which is fine but it's not doing anyone any good right now. Since most U.S. ethanol is produced from corn, and the required electricity from many distilleries comes mainly from coal plants, there has been considerable debate about how sustainable corn-based bio-ethanol could be in replacing fossil fuels. But even Henry Ford advocated for ethanol as fuel even during the prohibition, but "cheaper oil" caused gasoline to prevail. Capturing CO2 from from coal fired fire plants is affordable but sequestering carbon dioxide is the problem; pipes for CO2 as complex as ones for oil. So it is indeed a hydrofracturing problem...but we have to get on renewables as much as possible. No doubt about that.

Well the Saudis can pull oil out of the ground for about $1.50 a barrel so needless to say at current market value being over $100 per barrel they're making out pretty well. wink On the other hand it costs us about $20.00 a barrel to pull it out of the ground, but then again we're not servicing 40% of the world so it's not exacly worth our while.

I'm with James Woolsey and others "turn oil into salt argument". There was a time in history when Roman soldiers were paid in SALT! Soon after technological progressions came about that currency became obsolete obviously. Same goes with oil. Let's turn oil's value into the same value as salt which at one point in history had so much worth. We don't need it. It's worthless.

Well, give Karl a call and ask him to tell you about the math he used to arrive at that conclusion. The FY 2010 federal budget deficit was $1.3 trillion and the estimated FY 2011 federal budget deficit is $1.4 trillion. On the other hand, from FY 2002 through FY 2009, the federal government's national debt increased about $6 trillion.

Well the projections we're talking about here are through the year 2015 of course. I don't have all the numbers but this has definitely become a major point of the fiscal conservative side, especially considering the Obama administration didn't even pass a budget last year until after the deadline and much prodding.

But reportedly there would have been an increased discretionary spending by 84% if given the chance, an increase that later dwindled to about 27%. And try estimating the trillions of dollars in regulatory costs over the next 10 years small businesses WOULD have faced under Obama's healthcare bill which is now forgotten. Or what about the trillions in new tax increases that have been shot down.

My original point though regarded a comparison with he and Bush, who granted, was hardly a fiscal conservative.

Gas prices in metro Detroit are a whisker away from $4 a gallon in some cases as the average price jumped 10 cents a gallon during the weekend.

The BP station at Middlebelt and Wick roads near Metro Airport was charging $3.999.

Regular prices in the metro Detroit area range from $3.53 a gallon to $3.99. The average for the area jumped 10 cents a gallon over the weekend from $3.627 on Friday to $3.731 this morning, according to AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report. Grand Rapids, Jackson and Lansing were even higher with averages of $3.78, $3.78 and $3.79, respectively.

Aside from the war in Libya and unrest elsewhere in the Middle East, a large BP refinery near Gary, Ind., is scheduled to go down for maintenance this week, said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst with Gasbuddy.com in Brooklyn Park, Minn.

A phone call and e-mail to BP officials in Houston were not returned.

DeHaan said the refinery in northwest Indiana is one of the largest in the Midwest and could add to the upward pressure on wholesale and retail gas prices in coming days. He said he didn’t know how long the maintenance work would go on...

We hit $4/gallon here on Long Island.*

Considering we're still 6 weeks away from peak-price season (generally after Memorial Day) we MAY be seeing the dreaded $5 per gallon number by mid-summer. panic

* (There is still one local place selling gas for $3.99; most others are at about $4.05).

I'm currently paying $4.35/gallon. We filled up the Camaro last week and spent $75! eek

Granted, a Camaro isn't exactly the most fuel efficient car in the world...but STILL!

It's "only" $3.75+ here... NJ is usually pretty good that way (at least)

Gas prices expected to drop 50 cents by summer
Quote:

By CHRIS KAHN, AP Energy Writer – 1 hr 56 mins ago

NEW YORK – Some relief from suffocating gas prices will likely arrive just in time for summer vacation. Expect a drop of nearly 50 cents as early as June, analysts say.

After rocketing up 91 cents since January, including 44 straight days of increases, the national average this past week stopped just shy of $4 a gallon and has retreated to under $3.98. A steady decline is expected to follow.

It might not be enough to evoke cheers from people who recall gas stations charging less than $3 a gallon last year. But it would still ease the burden on drivers. And it might help lift consumer spending, which powers about 70 percent of the economy. A 50-cent drop in prices would save U.S. drivers about $189 million a day.

Typically, gas prices peak each spring, then fall into a summertime swoon that can last several weeks. This year's decline should be gradual but steady, said Fred Rozell, the retail pricing director at the Oil Price Information Service.

The lowest here is Costco at $3.98 for regular. Everyone else is well over $4, and even my favorite Shell station in nearby NJ is $3.97.

Oil has dropped about $15 a barrel in the last week. Of course gas prices will not drop as fast as they would have risen, if oil jumped $15 a barrel.

Time to resurrect this bad boy. 9 months since the last post. We've been content? Oooops here comes Iran shutting down Hormuz. Time for all good speculators to specutlate. Down here in cheap-gas Jersey (where BAM will never go) gas is $3.39 at the Citgo - if you pay cash. It was $2.99 around Christmas. If Obama can patch this one up, his reelection is guaranteed.

He can't. The power behind the oil companies (Bush family, etc.) is starting to scream that their profits may not be worthy of a new record.... time to rape the American public again.

I heard (just this morning) that the average price here on Long Island is $3.93/gallon. My local place is only $3.79.

Five dollar prices are being mentioned for the summer.

Gas is currently $3.39 and up here, too, and it was $2.98 at one point when I didn't need it. ohwell

I do wonder, tho, why some like Shell have prices 10c higher than the cheaper places and no one goes there - why don't they compete??

I studied Italian for 2 semesters. Not once was a "C" pronounced as a "G", and never was a trailing "I" ignored! And I'm from Jersey! tongue lol
