Don't know why but I am surprised that Hugo is getting so many awards. It seems like it wasn't talked about as much as the others.

As for that Drinking Game, "Each time someone at your Oscar party comments on how they thought "Hugo" was an animated film" -- I really thought it was! whistle lol

Mind you TIS, this is the technicals. If the movie had been a hit (it flopped), along with those great reviews, it probably would've been a juggernaut in the "serious" categories.

It won't happen, but I wish Gary Oldman won Best Actor. Great actor, this is unbelievably his first Oscar nomination. And he was splendid in TINKER TAYLOR SOLDIER SPY.

you confused it with TINTIN?

(I really enjoyed TINTIN too. 7 or 8 out of 10, maybe 8 in my best mood. Always a joy when Spielberg makes a quality release and not...well, not an INDY IV.)

I've not seen WAR HORSE, believe it or not.

EDIT - more Deadline snarking:
Quote:
“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” (Sony Pictures Releasing) Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall

They won last year for The Social Network. Obviously, the Academy gives Oscars to people who survived working with that pain-in-the-ass David Fincher.

Sounds accurate.

Never heard of TINTIN, so I don't know... I think I'm thinking of some animated movie a couple years ago about a train or something? Didn't see it, either...

'its a wonderful life' and 'citizan kane' didn't do great at the theaters either, and look at them now.

Plummer will probably win Supporting Actor Oscar, but as a cinemaphile, I'm a real partisan for the great Max Von Sydow to win. (SEVENTH SEAL and EXORCIST 4 life.)

Fun Fact: Christopher Plummer allegedly gets pissed apparently when people bring up SOUND OF MUSIC to him. What if I bring up STAR TREK VI and DREAMSCAPE? tongue

EDIT - I liked RANGO, but that was a "kid's movie" made more for (and appreciated by) adults. Definatley not a mindless toy commercial as the studio probably expected.

I see Max Von Sydow is up for award. Gosh, I not only now him from his role as The Exorcist, Father Merrin, but I remember him playing the part of Jesus in "The Greatest Story Ever Told" back in the 60's. Don't know his age, but he has to be up there.

Some of these "set-ups" for the presenters are incredibly weak.

Agree. (That shit with RDJ was painfully unfunny. And he's a funny guy in general.)

from Deadline:
Quote:
Surprising that Hugo is winning so many technical awards. On the other hand, with a cost of $200+M, it probably employed every member of every craft guild in Hollywood and beyond, and they all voted for it. The Graham King Films/Paramount 3D pic has only made domestic $69.3M and foreign $46.4M for a worldwide total box office of $115.8M. In other words, it’ll never earn out.

That's a problem when you "work" in Hollywood World 24/7, box office becomes your religion.

They thought motion-capture animation wasn't "real" animation.

EDIT - Speaking of Ben Stiller, when was the last time he was funny? He's entering Eddie Murphy career phase. *shivers*

EDIT 2 - another long set-up that goes nowhere.

RISE OF THE APES should win the VFX Oscar. That was decent fun popcorn escape fare.

EDIT - Hugo wins again.
