In Godfather Part III he tells Vincent that he always felt he had a responsilbility for him. Michael could see that Vincent has the love of Sonny in him as well as that fiery temper, but he thinks Vincent could overcome that weakness. Vincent is also a tough guy and you need tough guys for protection.
