He was basically given a second chance, by surviving nearly the impossible, basically given a second chance to reform, change, etc. But he didn't, and in doing so, pissed away his second chance/redemption and sealed his fate.
I think that second change theory isn't a plausible one as every knew Tony was up his neck in the mob and as a
boss couldn't just walk away from it. Couldn't and wouldn't.
It's like God giving a guy without two legs an extra arm so he has a change to walk again. Doesn't make much sense.
