His name is Gregory Sierra, Goom. He quit after the third or fourth episode, and made Edward James Olmos a star. Sierra says it was the biggest mistake of his professional life. Yeah, the two characters (Rodriguez & Castillo) were very different though. It was said that Rodriguez was the image of a higher-ranked cop you'd see in the 70's. Castillo was said to have broke that mould because of the personality that was brought by Olmos.

I think his quiet demeanor as Castillo was a precursor for the Adam Schiff character played on "Law & Order." Both exuded a quiet yet powerful aura.

West Wing? Was that a TV show?  "Celestial Navigation" happens to be my favorite episode of WW. That was the episode where Olmos's character got arrested while antiquing in CT. I remember Olmos winning an Emmy for his role as Castillo, and when he went up to the podium, started his speech by saying, "See? He CAN smile!"
