Feds Charge 20 In Gambling Ring June 13, 2012 A Shelton man was one of 20 people charged recently for allegedly operating and participating in an illegal gambling business in Connecticut. The U.S. Attorney’s Office claims the group ran an illegal sports gambling website based in Costa Rica and three illegal card gambling clubs in Stamford and Hamden. Domenico Manchisi, 64, of Shelton, was charged with a single count of operation of an illegal gambling business, according to a U.S. Attorney’s Office press release. The charge carries a maximum term of five years in prison and a fine of $250,000. The press release names Stamford, Trumbull and New Canaan residents as the ringleaders, saying they were connected to the Gambino Crime Family of La Cosa Nostra in New York City. Dean Depreta, Richard Uva, Thomas Uva IV, Douglas Corbin and Joseph Borea were charged with conspiring to violate the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). They face up to 20 years in prison for the charge. The indictment, which is posted below, seeks $1.69 million from the five men — money that allegedly came from racketeering activity. Federal prosecutors said others involved in the alleged scheme face money laundering and other charges. “With these indictments, the Organized Crime Task Force has disrupted an alleged criminal organization that commits crimes against our society,” said William P. Offord, Special Agent in Charge, IRS Criminal Investigation. “Taking assets away from illegal organizations is one of the government’s most effective tools against money laundering and organized crime.” The matter is being investigated by the FBI Fairfield County Organized Crime Task Force, the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation, the Stamford Police Department, the Bridgeport Police Department and the Connecticut State Police. The Monroe, New Canaan, Shelton and Trumbull Police Departments assisted with the arrests of the defendants. http://valley.newhavenindependent.org/archives/entry/feds_charge_20_in_gambling_ringIndictment - http://www.scribd.com/doc/97012538/DePreta-Et-Al-Indictment

Read the indictment. It names them all as associates, with Deprata reporting to a NY soldier. Also gives a little history of Gambino interests in Connecticut. From what I can tell, only those 5 guys at the top of the indictment are specified as "associates of the Gambino Family of La Cosa Nostra." But that's where we get back to how one defines an associate. The looser the definition, the others could be labeled such as well.

The looser the definition, the others could be labeled such as well. If you count all these "associates of Cosa Nostra associates", I wonder what the total manpower of organized crime in the New York greater metro area would be? I'm sure it's well over 10,000.

Raab usually cited the ratio of 5 associates for every made guy. I don't mean just full-time mob associates like say Henry Hill or Meyer Lansky; I'm also talking about all the criminals who have say two degrees of separation from a made guy. Associates of associates, in other words.

Associates of associates, in other words. I understand that you meant. And expanding that out to a more loose definition, you're probably looking at the 10:1 ratio. At least 10 associates to every member is the highest I've seen. It's what I mean about associate estimates being rather flexible. You can see two very different estimates and they can both be right.

This is such BS I agree with you that drugs are a huge problem and scourge to our society. Gambling, especially OC controlled gambling, is also a problem. A lot of these mob controlled internet sites don't pay winners. The Lucchese off shore web sites that Perna ran were notorious for not paying off big winners. The gambling cases are often the best way to get guys to flip and build RICO cases.
Best way to catch the smart ones? Get an idiot working for them.

The thing is, when it comes to these mob gambling operations, the bets are placed through these pay-per-head websites but all the money is paid and collected locally in cash. In other words, players with a mob book aren't using credit cards. These online gambling sites, where credit cards are used to have an online balance, is something different.

Interesting, Ivy. These guys have been at it forever. And I have to say, Depreta is a stand-up kid. He did about a three year federal bit back in the early 2000s.
Someone asked if any of these guys were made? Well, I'm fairly sure that no one in the Stamford area has been made since Tony Megale back in the late '80s. It's one fuck-up after another up there, and I think the Gambinos are just leery of a lot of those guys. As far as the guys named in the indictment go, they were mostly around Megale and/or Nick Melia.
Re "asociates" --- I guess it's all according to your interpretation, but to me, someone has to be "on record" with the local soldier to be counted as an associate. Otherwise, you can make a case for every truck driver and dock worker being connected. And that just isn't the case.

it seems like ct is split 3 ways the eastern part the patriarca's, hartford and the north was the genovese. but the old guy volpe in hartford just died, and springfield is all screwed up and the gambinos down in the southeast are becoming a force if the underboss meagle comes home to that spot he is sicilian that might be good with the new boss dom c. even if just capo he'll have a huge crew with no comp. he owns that state and can probaly get guys made who ever he wants. theres alot of money to be made it would be a smart move. i dont even think theres a patriarca crew there maybe 1,2, guys who live on the rhode island ct border. funny thing there no violence in this indictment not a mention. fox woods is the best casino in america too, but no sport betting sucks, whens atlantic city gonna start, christie said it would be soon. dont have to worry about getting screwed when you hit big and the goomba tells you take a hike.i remember reading some family had a making ceremony at foxwoods. I think you're pretty much spot on as far as the layout goes in Connecticut. Of course, there was also that big bust back in 2006 involving Ianniello, James Galante, and Genovese control of the waste industry in the western part of the state.

Looks like some disharmony up there... The popularity of the Hamden site enraged local Genovese crime family, which launched an attack on the Gambino house at 2965 State St., Hamden, authorities said. That, in turn, led to an counterattack by the Gambinos on cars at the Genovese house at 37 Orlando St., West Haven. Court documents state that on Oct. 28, 2010, three Genovese associates unsuccessfully attempted to force open the electronic door at the Gambino club in Hamden but left after throwing rocks at the building. The following night, Chen said, DePreta, Uva and eight associates drove to the Genovese's West Haven club. There at least two cars were vandalized. Chen charged DePreta's "show of force in the face of a rival La Cosa Nostra family's encroachment is strong proof of DePreta's leadership role in safeguarding the Gambino crime family interests in southern Connecticut." http://www.stamfordadvocate.com/news/article/Bond-rejected-for-reputed-Gambino-chief-3656297.php

The Feds turned down a $4.5 million dollar bail package? That's ridiculous. It's a gambling case for God's sake. So in my opinion, there has to be more to this.
That said, DePreta ain't a kid anymore. He's 44 years old, and not having any assets in his name is just so, well, Gotti-like. If he could have shown some income, or even a piece of property, they wouldn't have denied his bail. It ain't 1940 anymore. Declare some income.

Im having a hard time trying to figure out why the feds in these hard economic times are throwing so much money at gambling cases. I mean get your priorities straight. They can never argue that they are going broke or in the red. Is this money part of what we borrowed from china?

Stamford Man in Mafia-Related Gambling Biz Sentenced Douglas Corbin, 52, of Stamford, was sentenced Wednesday to 21 months in jail for participating in an organized-crime-related gambling ring in Stamford. Posted by David Gurliacci (Editor) , January 29, 2014 at 06:21 PM The U.S. District Attorney's Office for Connecticut issued this news release late Wednesday afternoon about one member of the gambling ring who was sentenced the same day: Deirdre M. Daly, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that Douglas Corbin, 52, of Stamford, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Vanessa L. Bryant in Hartford to 21 months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, for his involvement in organized crime-controlled illegal gambling businesses. Corbin was also ordered to forfeit $100,000. According to court documents and statements made in court, after a long-term investigation led by the FBI Fairfield County Organized Crime Task Force, the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation and the Stamford Police Department, Corbin, Dean DePreta, Richard Uva and 17 other individuals were charged with various offenses related to their involvement in an illegal Internet sports bookmaking operation and illegal card gambling clubs. As part of the conspiracy, DePreta and Uva were involved in the collection and payment of “tribute” payments to Gambino organized crime family associates in New York. The investigation, which included the use of court-authorized wiretaps, revealed that Corbin was involved in a large-scale sports bookmaking operation in which gamblers placed bets with offshore Internet sports-gambling websites, particularly www.44wager.com based in Costa Rica. FBI analysis of the sports-betting web site utilized by the defendants determined that the total gross revenues of the Stamford-based gambling operation were nearly $1.7 million from October 2010 to June 2011. In addition, Corbin and others, operated a card gambling club at 514 Glenbrook Rd. in Stamford, where a house percentage, commonly referred to as a “rake,” was collected from every hand played. On June 20, 2013, Corbin pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to violate the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). DePreta and Uva pleaded guilty to the same charge. On October 9, 2013, DePreta was sentenced to 71 months of imprisonment and ordered to forfeit $300,000. On Oct. 24, 2013, Uva was sentenced to 46 months of imprisonment and ordered to forfeit $250,000. This matter is being investigated by the FBI Fairfield County Organized Crime Task Force, the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation, the Stamford Police Department, the Bridgeport Police Department and the Connecticut State Police. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Hal Chen and Peter Jongbloed.
