I figure if I knew guitar playing better, I'd appreciate this even more. I read a few comments by people who were amazed at how he re-tuned in between riffs seemingly by memorizing exactly how much of a turn to give it.

You could always get it back! At least you played at some point - I remember wanting to learn from my dad, and I only got through a couple of notes. Now I just listen to others play.
