Johnny Sonny Castagna was a made guy, both he and his son would later turn informant.


John "Sonny" Castagna, was a Providence, Rhode Island mobster who became a made man in the Patriarca crime family, whose control extended throughout New England for over three decades. Castagna was a respected man among the mafia, (Cosa Nostra) and he was known across New England as a man of honour until he broke the mafias code of silence by ratting out fellow members of the Patriarca crime family in the early 1990s.

Castagna was one of the 21 alleged members and associates of the Patriarca crime family indicted in March 1990. A sweeping Federal indictment charged various defendants with gambling, loan-sharking and murder to support the crime family, which is based in Providence, R.I. Castagna was facing a lengthy jail sentence and became a government informer in 1990. He revealed in court that a weeping Raymond Patriarca was warned during a late 1989 meeting in Boston that he would be killed if he didn’t step down. Presiding over that meeting was Joseph Russo with Robert Carrozza also in attendance.

When the RICO trials from the March 1990 indictments finally got underway, John F. "Sonny" Castagna, a former member of the Patriarca family, now turned government witness, revealed that Junior Patriarca would be killed by Boston mobsters if he did not step down. Castagna, testifying in May 1991, said the story was relayed to him by J. R. Russo.

"Raymond Junior had tears in his eyes and he was begging for his life," Castagna quoted Russo as saying.

The testimony took place during the Hartford trial which included defendant Gaetano Milano, who Castagna, now in the Federal Witness Protection Program with his son Jack Johns, claimed murdered William Grasso.

Thebarber, Thank you for the advice, but i am not arguing with anyone on this board all i am trying to say is get the facts straight about Ray jr and other certain people that they write about that is not true. Thebarber yes there were alot of big name guys taken off the street but all i can say is that they should of know better and stay away from Bobby Deluca and they would all be home now with there family's. Whats up everybody. I found this forum a few months ago and I really enjoying readind alot of the stuff on here. that being said i have to agree with little. I dont think anybody is jealous of ray jr but the guy is stand up. He did his time came home kept his nose clean. Delcuca and rosseti got out by giving up there friends.

From what I know, Ray JR would've never been Boss if it wasnt for Illario Zannino(aka Larry Baiona) who ever Zannino backed was gonna get the nod, he(Zannino)was a throw back guy and had alot of good friends in NY... Gennaro Angiulo(who paid his way to become a "made" man was a heavy earner and up for Boss but he was not respected as much as Ray JR who had the blessing of Zannino and the NY hierarchy, I mean Angiulo never made his bones he used money as a means to get "made"....

Crazy how there is never no mention of guys from the North End of Providence, RI--like Eddie Romano, Ronnie Cappola, Minnie Ruggerio, etc etc...
