Sam was so crazy he once, as punishment to his wife, went to the south side and kidnapped some random black dude, took him back to his house by gunpoint, and forced him and his wife to sleep together.

He also had a sound-proof room in his basement for the express purpose of torturing people.

Finally he got so out of control they sent his onetime protege Tony Spilotro and someone else, I forget who, to knock him down. If memory serves Tony shot him with a shotgun in his driveway, first ripping off his arm, then blasted him again, finishing him off.

There is a book on DeStefano called "A Mob of His Own." Ha... never read it but always liked the title.

His nephew still owns a fairly popular bar down on Rush Street, actually one of the only old school "joints" like that left down there.

It was Tony and Sam's brother Mario who killed him. Sam and Mario killed their other brother before too, that whole family was fucked up.

I read that Murray Humphreys told Ricca/Accardo something to the effect that "you guys need to straighten him out." The Hump said Mad Sam was generating too much publicity.

Lots of info. on Humpheys in the FBI files

That's interesting. Gus Russo certainly chose to make Humphreys the star of his book.

Probably an easy decision since much of his info was coming from Humphrey's window, I think he even got a hold of Curley's personal journals from her.

Dyno was crazy. My father knew him very well. He was a made guy in the Taylor St. Crew. He ran his own sub crew like all made guys in Chicago. He had a 'Juice Crew' with at least 6 full time soldiers working for him.
He actually belonged to Ricca. Dyno would only listen to Ricca or Giancana. Noone else could control him. Auippa/Cerone waited until Ricca died in 1972 before they killed him in 1973. he didn't last but 6 months after Paul died.
He was a great earner AND LOVED TO TORTURE PEOPLE.

Chicago - did you ever hear the story about Mad Sam and his intention to either write a newspaper column or do some interviews with a reporter? I honestly can't remember the story, but it pertained to some type high-profile situation. Anyway, the article concluded by saying something to the effect that "after a visit from Sam Giancana" Mad Sam decided that he no longer had any interest in the project."

For the life of me I can't remember the story.

It would have been a blast attending Sam's trial for the traffic ticket. Among other things he supposedly flashed wads of money in the courtroom, and told a girl in the front row that she should "go into the loan shark business, right here in traffic court. You would find that judges are your best customers".

He objected to questioning about his associates, screaming "I won't have the names of gangsters mentioned at my trial".
He demanded to cross examine the prosecutor, stating that "Joe Stalin might have sent him".
He also referred to himself as an "eminent attorney" who got his education at the state prison.

After ten days of the public packing the courtroom to watch Sam make a complete ass out of the judge,Sam was found not guilty of driving the wrong way on a one way street.

The general consensus is that the judge was one of Sam's juice customers, and as such had to endure the humiliation.

Nickey Eyes, Sam killed his other brother because he had a drug problem. Sam got permission from Ricca/Giancana and killed him. Sam told my father years ago that he wanted to 'SOLVE' his brothers drug problem.

I'm surprised that Mad Sam lasted as long as he did. Apparently he "kicked up" lots of money to his bosses. Regardless, even Ricca had his limits.

Yeah, I read the story about his court appearance for driving the wrong way. I bet the courtroom was a circus!

He was really lucky that Ricca tolerated his erratic behavior.

Ricca sponsored Dyno into the Mafia. Ricca liked DeStefano the way Vito Corleone liked Luca Brasi.
That's the only comparison that comes to mind.

DeStefano was a Juice Banker. He was a made guy with a crew.
His financial partners were Ricca & Giancana. They put up 50% of his Juice money. DeStefano put up the other 50%. HE WAS A HUGE earner.

Dyno had special privileges being a made in in the Taylor St. Crew and being direct with Mooney and Ricca. He could do anything he wanted in Chicago as long as it didn't directly interfere with another made guy.

After Mooney and Ricca were gone, it was too dangerous to keep him around for Auippa/Cerone. They were a little afraid of Dyno because he was crazy and could only be controlled by Ricca or Giancana.
DeStefano didn't respect Auippa, Cerone or Accardo.

F White, Who said he wasn't made? Roemer?
That was a joke that DeStefano told that stupid jerk Roemer and he believed him.
DeStefano was also a jokester. Look at his courtroom antics!

Of Course he was made.
He was Italian.
He lived on Taylor St.
He belonged to the 42's Italian Street Gang who all graduated into the Outfit.
He killed for Ricca & Giancana.
He was partnered direct with Ricca & Giancana.
Should I continue??

In Gus Russo's book "The Outfit," he was told by Murray Humphreys's ex-wife that he knew he was being recorded in some locations and set up staged conversations, including one where Cerone and Pierce talked about killing aldermen Esposito and D'Arco. Roemer thought it was real.

Don't really know much about The Outfit, but was wondering if someone who knows their stuff could tell me if DeStefano was a made guy or just a big earning associate.

Thanks.
