Will one of you brains help me resolve an argument over a mathematical question?
What is 6-1x0+2/2=? 1? Wait...looking further, I think it might be 4.

What is 6-1x0+2/2=? Well, what you've got to do is to do divisions and multiplications first, left to right: 6-0+1 So only then you could do addition and subtraction. And the answer is 7.

Well, what you've got to do is to do divisions and multiplications first, left to right:
6-0+1
So only then you could do addition and subtraction. And the answer is 7. That was the answer (and rationale) I was hoping to see someone else come up with. I believe it's the correct answer. afsaneh - I'm sure you understand why I don't take you out drinking tonight to celebrate.

Same answer I came up with.
And, to my mind, anything beyond basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division does not exist.

Signor V. That's what I'm saying. AND then it's bust out the calculator. I absolutely hate math. Wish it were a strong point for me but it isn't. TIS

You've jarred my memory about something I seem to recall from around 10-15 years ago:
Mattel had put out a talking Barbie doll, and among the things it said was, "Math is hard!"
Well, you never heard such an outcry from women's organizations (and parental ones)! They complained so much that Mattel recalled the doll and had Barbie "fixed."
As one of our local newscasters likes to say, "Comment as you see fit."

The answer has to be 7.
I was always taught (back in the days when dinosaurs roamed the earth) that no matter if it's 2/2, 3/3, 4/4, etc., when the numerator and denominator are the same, the answer is (and can only be) one.

Come on folks..... anything X zero is zero add zero to 2/2 which is = to 1 and the answer is one (1) just because they throw you off by saying 6-1 it would still be 5 x 0 = 0 2/2 is = to 1

Those who don't come up with answer 7, need to read this page: http://www.helpingwithmath.com/by_subject/equations_expressions/equ_operations_order_5oa1.htm Mathematicians agreed upon certain rules for solving math, called the order of operations. 1-Grouping symbols come first. If there is more than one grouping symbol they go in this order: parentheses, brackets, braces. 2-Exponents come next. You will use these in future lessons. For this lesson, you just need to know that they come after grouping symbols in the order. 3-Multiplication or Division comes next. They have the same priority, so whichever is first left to right goes first. 4-Addition or Subtraction comes next. They have the same priority, so whichever is first left to right goes first. Don't feel overwhelmed by complicated problems. Take them step by step, one piece at a time, and you'll be able to solve them!
So, as you see, there's an order. You can't do everything left to right. Here we don't have parenthesis. We don't have exponents either. Just simple multiplication, division, addition and subtraction. So you have to do multiplication and division first. Later you could do addition and subtraction. Also, if you have windows 7, you can punch the numbers into its calculator to get 7.
