Today is the 99th birthday of the forward pass, introduced by Notre Dame against its game against Army. ND completed 14 of 17 forward passes for 243 yards in upsetting the heavily favored Cadets.

WGN Sports Night is reporting that Mike Ditka was playing cards at a suburban country club when he noticed his hands were not working right. Da Coach's doctor calls it a minor stroke. Ditka commented to Chicago Tribune he is doing well.

Johnny Manziel became the first freshman winner of the Heisman Trophy. and he gave a wonderful acceptance speech. Although i was hoping Manti Te'o would win, I was happy for Johnny Football, who represented his university well.

Te'o received a higher vote total than any player, who played defense only. Of course, time will help determine his place in college football history, but he may go down as the greatest defensive player in NCAA history.

I'd have to say that the greatest college defensive players in my life are Te'o, Ross Browner, Hugh Green, Bruce Smith, Steve Emtman and Ndamukong Suh. And just a stone's throw from this group I'd put Charles Woodson, Kenny Easley and Deion Sanders.

One thing I noticed, was that I didn't realize the Heisman voting body is broken down into regional bodies ("primaries" you can say) and this included SouthEast and SouthWest.

I mention this because SouthEast obviously includes the SEC...which is the new home for Texas A&M. SouthWest, is home to Texas...where Texas A&M of course resides.

Talk about a regional electoral advantage for Johnny Touchdown. In the Midwest (home of ND of course), Te'o won the region but only by 10% over Manziel.

Texas A&M had a gag order on freshmen players talking to the press, but this by exception was waved at the right time for Manziel and gave a telegnic personality that reminds one of Tebow when he was kicking ass on the field and not warming the bench. This clinched the Heisman for him.

Plus with zero evidence, I like to think Te'o was hurt also by the fact that fair or not, Notre Dame was considered to have a much weaker schedule compared to the typical SEC schedule. Texas A&M lost what, 1 or 2 games? I can't remember. But none the less one of them was to Florida. They're quality defeats. (Unlike say if ND had lost that close game with the mediocre Pitt.)

My eldest boy who i have mentioned in here beofre as a general sports whizz is now whooping it up at basketball. His school team are unbeaten this year and carrying all before them. His coach has mentioned him and a couple of the others going to try out with the local pro team, the Eagles, see if they can't get into the Juniors set up. He would like to but unfortuneately is so wrapped up with football that he simply has not got the time. Shame

Excelling at multiple sports poses a dilemma for young men his age...but it's a pretty good problem to have. Glad to hear about his basketball exploits.

My son's high school has about 2,000 students, so a lot of talentedd kids don't make the basketball team, so they play in a pretty competitive rec league, in which I've always volunteered or coached in some capacity. I think I posted once about 4-5 years ago where we lost a championship game because a referee, who happened to be a board member that served with the opposing coach, called a series of peculiar technical fouls on one of our players in the final ten seconds.

Well, this is my last year as a coach because my son is a senior, and my last chance to avenge that controversial loss against that smug coach, who's still on the board.

I might be able to let it go, but I've always coached with a friend, and we keep reminding each other of it. The opposing coach is president of the league, and the year he beat us in the championship, he added a player to his roster in the midseason, who had been kicked off the varsity team for repeated fights.

If we lose on Sunday, I just might throw up.

The fat bastard beat us again. My son was called in to work and missed the game along with a pretty decent player. We had a lead near the end of the first period, but they went on a run and opened up a 17 point lead early in the second half. We cut it to 8 and lost by 12. And then I got to watch the second half of the Steeler game.

Ouch, bad day all around. Builds character, though .

I don't know if anybody else likes the supreme sport of darts here but at the World Championships last night, Dutch flyer Michael van Gerwen nearly threw 2 9-dart finishes in a row, which would have been an epic achievement!!
