Action News has learned the shooting death of a man on Wednesday afternoon in South Philadelphia has a link to the mob. The shooting happened in the 2800 block of Iseminger Street at 3:00 p.m. The victim was found slumped over in a pickup truck with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital where he later died. That man, said to be in his 50s, also has ties to the mob, sources told Action News. His name has not been released pending notification of family. Witnesses reported seeing black Honda leaving the scene, and gave police the license plate number. Sources tell Action News that a car, registered to alleged mob member Anthony Nicodemo, was seen leaving the area. There was no immediate word on if Nicodemo was involved in the killing. However, he has been taken into custody for questioning by police. Police also say they are looking for another person in connection with this case. There was no word on a motive. "I heard the five gunshots, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. I know they were gunshots," said neighbor Joe Lyons. "My family knew him real well. I can't believe this happened. I was at work when I heard about it," said John Smith, Jr. Nicodemo had previously been implicated in an illegal $22 million sports betting operation running out of the Borgata in Atlantic City. Authorities are also looking to see if this killing has any ties to the ongoing racketeering trial of reputed mobster Joseph "Uncle Joe" Ligambi and six of his underlings. They are accused of using threats of violence to run illegal gambling and loan shark operations. Ligambi is described as the current boss of the Philadelphia Mob. http://www.fivefamiliesnyc.com/2012/12/man-with-links-to-philly-mob-killed.html

If this murder was sanctioned by the administration especially with all these guys currently on trial, then it is a stupid move IMO Interesting this murder coincided with the feds resting their case today... https://twitter.com/chriscato/status/279034622778679296/photo/1/largeK9 Unit in front of Nicodemo's cheerfully lit home on 17th St. Detectives are inside and have towed away his SUV.

As federal prosecutors rested their case against reputed Mafia boss Joseph Ligambi, police investigated an apparent mob hit Wednesday in South Philly that left a 50-year-old man dead of gunshot wounds. Police were questioning Anthony Nicodemo, 41, a reputed mob soldier, in connection with the killing, and were seeking a warrant to search his Packer Park home. Yellow crime-scene tape stretched across Iseminger Street near Johnston and cops were scouring the scene for evidence in what appeared to be the city's first mob hit in nearly a decade. A woman from the neighborhood who said she was afraid to give her name said she'd heard five gunshots around 3 p.m., when a man neighbors and police sources identified as 50-year-old Gino DiPietro was shot several times in the back and fatally wounded on the narrow street. "He was in out and out trouble. He'd been in jail for drugs," a neighbor said of DiPietro, who'd apparently been ambushed while getting into his truck on the block.DiPietro was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital and pronounced dead at 3:21 p.m. Tensions were high in the hours immediately following the murder. Distraught relatives of the victim angrily told reporters to leave. On the next block of Iseminger Street north of where DiPietro was gunned down, where relatives of Nicodemo live, they shouted at reporters to "Get out" and stay away from their homes. "It's a shame, because this is a nice neighborhood and it's near Christmas," said one neighbor who did not want to be named, adding that he knew the Nicodemo family. When told that Anthony Nicodemo had been taken into custody in connection with a homicide, the neighbor said, "It can't be. They're nice people. Nothing happens around here." Nicodemo, who law-enforcement sources describe as a "made" member of the Philly mob, pleaded guilty in 2009 to participating in running a sports bookmaking ring inside the Borgata Hotel Casino poker room. Ligambi and his associates-Joseph "Mousie" Massimino, George Borgesi, Anthony Staino, Damion Canalichio, Gary Battaglini and Joseph "Scoops" Licata-went on trial in mid-October on nonviolent charges, including loan-sharking, extortion, sports betting and the operation of illegal video-poker machines. A law-enforcement source said DiPietro, believed to be a mob associate, may have made enemies by cooperating with authorities while incarcerated. http://www.fivefamiliesnyc.com/2012/12/man-murdered-in-south-philadelphia-mob.html

I don't think Uncle Joe would sanction this. Everyone on trial is having their lawyers stress how the organization was 'non-violent'. Nicodemo must be doing his own thing now. Who knows could have been sanctioned by mazzone or joey, the guy was ambushed so it looked planned...but nicodemo could have done it without the ok or could have been sending a msg to guys on the street...

hopefully the feds can solve this murder, the murders committed under the ligambi era were never solved even though the feds initially might have had suspects/evidence, etc

apparently this guy secretly cooperated while in the can, probably got some of his sentenced shaved off, came back out and the guys on the street welcomed him with open arms and waited till he didnt suspect anything and then he was whacked...just a theory, what doesnt make sense is the freaking timing of this murder, during a major mob trial!wtf?! maybe it was a drug deal gone bad,etc...
if this hit was planned, why send one of your only hitters/made guys out on the street to do a piece of work? your fam is already a skeleton crew as it is, makes no sense.
